Official Wiikey Fusion to GC MOD troubleshooting thread!

All those exposed wires scare me.

That is a normally closed switch, no? If you've shorted anything, you may need the type of switch that 1.9v can be applied when the switch is pressed.

Since the menu is flashing between insert and reading disc, I'm fairly certain your issue is either with the switch, or with FFC alignment/bad contact. Try readjusting things a bit, and cover those wires up. Wiikeys are SUPER finicky, enough so that even having your fingers close to the ground wires will make it act funny.

Ok, I've covered over the wires with electrical tape, and tried it again. In the reading disk menu, the blue light would not come on ever, but it would still flicker fainlty once when the GC turned on. If I held my finger across the two connections on the button (still exposed, as I still need to change it) the blue light comes on strong and flickers alot. So, I'm inclined to think the problem is the switch as well. I've double checked the connections on the ffc, and they all go through.

The button is a normaly open IO, I still need to get a normaly closed. Should I opt for a straight IO or one with a third option for a 1.9V connection as well. I figured it was the best I could do for the time being, and I planned on just holding it in during testing.

So, the switch is deffinately the issue??

Ok, I just got my switch, added it in, but it's still not working. However, now when I turn it on the blue light flickers once faintly, as per always, and when I press the button in the gameplay section, the blue light will come on brightly for about a second, every time, consistently, whenever I press it. It was not doing this before, so I'm hoping it's a good sign. It goes out after a second though, and won't come back on unless I press the button again :S. If I don't have the SD card in when I start the GC, the light will flicker orange. It's never done this before either. When it didn't work I tried realigning the ffc again and again, and I moved the ground from one of the ground holes to the egde of the GC mother board (Below). What am I missing??

I took out the lid switch 'switch', so now it's just a solid connection, but nothing has changed by way of results. When the button is not being touched it toggles between 'Please insert a nintendo gamecube Disk' and 'Reading disk', and as soon as I take my finger from the button after it has been pressed in it reverts to 'The disk cannot be read, refer to the instruction bookelt'.

If the SD card is NOT in the reader when I press the button the wiikey flashed Orange instead of Blue. I still have not got it to find the 'disk'.

Yes, as Ashen said 3 or so times.
Meaning, when you press it, it breaks the connection.

Sorry, I don't think I said that right. My 'eject' switch on pin 29 is a normaly closed tact switch, my lid switch on pin 23 is just a solid connection now, as Ashen said in his last post that it sounds like the lid switch is open now.

I have put in a normal switch like ProgMetalMan suggested, but I didn't expect this to change anythhing as that switch is required for multi-disk game swapping, not merely to get the wiikey to boot. I did discover that if I held in the pin 29 normally closed tact for a second or two before releasing, the blue light would flash once (brightly) then stay on with no flickering whatsoever (brightly still). I get the same results withought the SD card in, only the light is orange. Both times once the button has been held in the GC freezes on 'Please insert NINTENDO GAMECUBE DISK'. I don't get any other messages. I'm still craving my first glance at the linux penguin on my GC.

Sudden thought, since I've tested and retested and retested all the connections and switches and what not, could the issue be my wires themselves?? What resistance should I be measureing over what distance of wire to know it's not that??

Sorry about the Quad post, but it will be my last. WOOOOOOHHHH!!!!! I found the issue and I've done a workaround. Wiikey fusion now working and running games on original GC. SHWEET!!! Hole 13 was fried on the GC mobo side, and hence wasn't working, I attached it the the thing labeled 'maximum safe cut distance' in the walkthrough for wire 13. I can't stress enough that if it's not working to check and RECHECK and check AGAIN. Because that was how I overcame my issue. Thanks Ashen and Progymetalman for their help, I wouldn't have got this far withough. CHEERS!!

I have a problem guys, my portable gamecube froze in the middle of super mario sunshine, I then turned it off and tryied again, and it froze again in the same spot.
And now it won't access the cubic menu screen, saying there's an error, and to turn it off, much like when there's no disk drive or wiikey...
I'm scared, what do?
I'm gonna open it first thing when I have some free time, but I sure as Heck could go for some insight first...

Thanks

My tachs may have shorted out, the eject, lid close ones ., I ran it anyway, will it affect it ? Should Blue light come one when the Gamecube does?

ATTENTION EVERYONE:

It's worth noting that the wiikey fusion (depending on which one you buy, and the strength of your grounding) will misbehave BIG TIME prior to the v1.5 update. I cannot stress this enough. Yes, its kinda been mentioned before, but modders should be aware that you may have to do some very tedious things, simply to get to the wiikey menu and get the card to read.

In some case, your wiikey might:
- not detect properly with your normally closed switch
- give red error lights
- continue flashing, and eventually giving a general error on the whole gamecube
- freeze up the whole gamecube
- refuse to load the card inserted
- refuse to boot to linux when card is not inserted (I could never get it to boot with the card inserted)
- even when in the linux menu, the card will never load, and freeze on "mounting"
- will not even show the "linux" symbol at the startup menu, but just a blank space with "start game"

How to deal with this nonsense? Well, you have to play with it a little. I could NOT get my wiikey to work with my switch (the switch works now that I did 1.5v update, but not before that). What worked for me, was to hold the pin 29 wire to ground, then quickly and briefly pull it away and then back to ground, holding it on ground for the duration of the update process. Doing this, you should get the linux menu to show up (or a blank space with "start game"). Then in the menu, it will say "error" or something, then that will go away and it will say "mounting" or something like that. Now, it might freeze on "mounting." This happened to me SEVERAL times. You can try hitting A during this mounting sequence, or you can try pulling out the card and reinserting the card. Keep in mind, if you toggle the pin 29 grounding AT ALL, you will most likely freeze up the menu.

In any case, if your wiring is perfect, don't give up, and try to get it to do the 1.5v update.

I can get to the disk loading screen, it doesn't show linux or anything, it gives me an error when it tries to read the disk
