New Computer?

I'm starting to save up for a new Desktop but I need some help deciding. I want a multi-core and a good amount of RAM. It's mainly for video-editing and general use however it would be nice to have a computer I can play games on. I really need a new computer because my Dell Dimension 2400 isn't cutting it. (2.4GHz Pentium 4, 1GB RAM I think it's DDR1, no Graphics card, only PCI slots so I can't put a decent graphics card in) My price range is about $400 to $600.

Here's a couple that got good reviews in Consumer Reports :p :

Don't expect to do much gaming with the GPU in the first one.

The second one's cheapest option ought to do alright, it's got a good new processor and a fair amount of RAM along with ample hard drive space and an actual dedicated gpu.

Have you looked into building?

400-600? If you want a laptop, I recommend a ThinkPad T500. You can get 'em with an HD Radeon 3650, which is great for a laptop. The thing kicks ass performance wise.

I can set you up a decent desktop for that amount on newegg if you want too.

By "set me up" do you mean you would actually build it for me or you would just tell me what parts to get. Because building it isn't an issue for me. I just don't really know what's good and what's not. And I'm looking for a desktop not a laptop.

For that price range you could get a decent gaming setup made.

There's lots of lists in the public wishlists folder at newegg, go have a look there, you might find something to suit your price range.

Only one problem. I don't game snowpenguin. Only game I own for PC (aside from the included solitare) is the Portal Demo. I don't really plan on buying more games. I want powerful CPU, a good amount of RAM, and a graphics card that can run Aero. I'm set.

Well if you don't want to do ANY gaming besides portal..... You could probably get by without a dedicated GPU at all.

There are still rigs on newegg that will help you, otherwise I could point you to a good motherboard and CPU and some nice ram and a good 750 GB hard drive. But even then you won't be looking at that huge price you were expecting.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146784 This is the RAM I use, there's other, cheaper ram out there as well of course. Probably be wanting two for your price range.

As for a case, that's preference really. I use the coolermaster storm scout, which is AWESOME and I got it on sale for $70! A nice case that I've used before and seems well loved at a good price is the antec 300, though the antec 900 is pretty popular as well.

I think that comes to about $400 plus the cost of a case.

Thanks for the help guys. I think I might hold off on a new desktop right now and get a Pandora. (In the next batch) I'll come back to this when I get enough money after that.

I also have the Phenom II X2, and I unlocked the other two cores on it, so I have a quad-core now. Your motherboard has to have a certain chipset to be able to unlock cores, though, so if it's something you want to do, make sure your mobo can do it.

GET IT if you buy any processor.

Also, you must get Team Fortress 2. This is not a matter of "want," you need to get it. It's only $20 and you will enjoy every minute of it.

x4= quad
x2= dual

They're actually the same processor. Two of the cores on the x2 are locked, and you can unlock them, but heed what T_W said.

if you are going to get TF2 just buy orange box
comes with it, also comes with HL2, HLW: ep 1, ep 2, lost coast, and portal..

Another ad guy...

If you're going to get a ThinkPad, I recommend the ThinkPad T500 with the HD radeon 3650 switchable graphics option. It's nothing amazing, but it'll run TF2 very happily. It has a 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo 45nm P8400, and 2GB DDR3 @ 1066mhz (mine features 4GB, but eh). 9-cell battery can reach over 10 hours if you play your cards right by switching to integrated graphics when you don't need the high-end ATI card. The keyboard is god-tier and it has a trackpad and trackpoint for the option of either one. The LCD is a very high quality IPS display at 1680x1050.

Oh, and it has all the bullflax markety things the underpaid man from overseas wrote in the above post. Maybe they will learn some day?

Bibin, you said $400-$600 range, but i find it more in the 1.5k range. Are you sure your talking about the right lappy?
