So, my roommates are trying to get a new desktop. They thought they'd go with cyber-monday deals or something, but missed out.

This is what they were looking at:

So, let's call that par, I guess.

Looking around, we noticed we already have a case, psu, and 8gb of DDR3 ram.
So, with $550, what can we do to make that awesome?

A few things they want:
Multiple GPU support, if possible. They have a geforce 8800 gt they want to keep being able to use, or something...
500gb min hdd

They think they have a good enough PSU for whatever, but I think it should probably be upgraded, too... so if we can toss that in the budget, that would be great.

It's really not worth keeping an 8800 GT for anything, especially since his budget allows for something much nicer. Even buying a second one and SLIing them is gonna give pretty flax performance by today's standards.

Go with something like this, depending on his preferred GPU maker:

Nvidia: http://i.imgur.com/aRfji.png

(swap out the motherboard if you really want SLI support on the Nvidia one)

Also, make sure the PSU is powerful enough to handle the load, if not cut the HDD size or something and get a new one.

Don't get that cyberpower PC. It's really bad. I have a list for you, but Newegg won't cooperate.

It involves an Intel i5-3570k, ASRock Pro3 Z77 mobo, GTX 560 TI 2gb, and a 1tb 7200 Seagate HDD. I'll post the link as soon as it decides to work. Price is $570 pre-rebate, $540 after.

Fine. I revised it. Try this one. It's $544.96 after rebates, + $9.55 shipping.

The total would be $554.51. But I'd switch to this GPU because it's in stock and only $20 more after rebate.

2x 550ti should beat that though while being cheaper.
