Afro's Official Music Bump Vol. 1 (I'll be doing three album reviews every week or so in this thread.)
Madvillain - Madvillainy Hip Hop
The collaboration project between DJ Madlib and MC MF DOOM. Madvillain released one album Madvillainy, which received critical acclaim and heavy play from underground Hip Hop fans.
My Review: There has never been such a perfect pairing in Hip Hop as Madlib and MF DOOM. Madlib's dense, bass-heavy production perfectly complements DOOM's oblique, abstract lyricism and gruff voice. No song on here surpasses the 3-minute mark, with most tracks being in the 1-2 minute range, the perfect amount of time for DOOM. Madlib's production is interesting and entertaining enough to stand by itself. From the second track, "Accordion", you can see the strange samples he uses (in this case, a strangely emotive accordion sample). You can also hear how well Madlib and DOOM worked together. Often, DOOM references Madlib's production in his lyrics. Overall, this album is a must hear. Rating: ★★★★★★★★★✰
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Big Star - #1 Record Power Pop
Along with Cheap Trick and Badfinger, Big Star are one of the legends of first-wave Power Pop.
My Review: Big Star's distinctly catchy brand of Power Pop is just amazing. This debut showcases the wonderful songwriting talents of Alex Chilton. Some of you may recognize the third track "In The Street" from a certain popular television show. If you are at all interested in Power Pop (such as Weezer, Cheap Trick, etc), you should definitely give this album a listen. Rating: ★★★★★★★★✰✰
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The United States of America - The United States of America Psychedelic Rock/Experimental Rock
A lost gem of the psychedelic 60's, The United States of America blend tape music, sound collage, psych rock, and other genres to bring one of the best albums of the 60's.
My Review: Man, what can I say about this album that can do it justice. Nothing, really, but I'll try my best. This album opens up with "The American Metaphysical Circus", which starts with a strange collage of march music followed by the voice of Dorothy Moskowitz which is slowly distorted into a robot-esque voice. After that, it only gets stranger. Perhaps the strangest track on this album is "I Won't Leave My Wooden Wife For You, Sugar," which blends Psychedelic Rock, Dixieland Jazz, and Country with strangely distorted instrumentation and a off-sounding violin. But, despite all of the experimentation, this album never shorts the listener on hooks. Every track on here is memorable. An absolute must-listen for any fan of experimental, psychedelic, or just strange music. Rating: ★★★★★★★★★★

Got this album on vinyl in the clearance bin for $3.20 at Hot Topic. I liked the name and the cover looked cool so I bought it. I don't own a record player, to my delight it's available to download for free under a Creative Commons license. I've enjoyed it so far. Here's the first song.
I will never listen to any music AfroLH post, ever again. 48 hours later, and still have the same few words ringing over and over in my head. she really wants me to call her... maybe.
My iTunes is filled with showtunes, ska-punk, and little of anything else, so I'm probably not pleasing anybody with my choices. However, these are a few of my favorites, a little of everything.
Solos in music is almost always pretentious wankery, they add nothing to a song except for "LOOK HOW FAST I CAN MOVE MY FINGERS" bit that usually gets boring after the first time, imo.
