Sam's PCp

Something Ive been wondering:
I decided just to use the computers built in speaker and headphone jack, and do away with the screens audio entirely. However, I would love to have pushbutton volume control. Any Idea how I could accomplish that? Like, my keyboard has volume up down buttons. I want them, without the keyboard. And I dont want to deal with any microcontrollers or any of that junk. They take up space.

How about using a program like joy2key or similar to assign a certain button combo (ex: start+d-pad up/down) for volume control?

I have thought about doing that with Xpadder, but I dont know if I can do combo key presses with it.

My BIOS is a crippled piece of flax. It has no clocking settings at all. I really would like to overclock it. But Id also like to not flash the BIOS. Probably not possible, right?

Joy2Key has button combos, I think -- both ways, too, meaning you can assign one key to execute multiple button presses or assign a combination of multiple keys to perform one function.

Been a while since I've messed with it, but it's a great piece of software.

I will look into that. Im also looking into Tiny7. Of course, when I say looking into, I mean, "installing right now."

On a different harddrive, of course. I was hoping to get 64 bit, but there is no 64 bit version. Perhaps I will get a real 64 bit version and try that too.

I installed tiny7 into a vm, it was the vista interface and all vista everything. I instantly deleted the thing. (Maybe I just got some wrongly named iso)

Both Vista and 7 use Aero, but they arent similar enough to mistake one for the other. Im betting you had a wrongly named torrent. Im gonna swap drives and start the install right now, so, if the numbers are right, i'll be back in 25 minutes.

Dang that's really disappointing about your Mass Effect 2 performance. I'm sorry you're having trouble. :( I'm pretty sure it's the CPU holding you back, but the ION might be partly to blame as well. I've seen this video that shows the game running on an identical spec netbook. But apparently, just like you, he was testing in an early area. Hopefully Direct X 10/11 will have some performance increases due to them (supposedly) being better optimized. Good luck my friend.

Edit: By the way, you mentioned something about push-button volume control. It may be possible. It depends on what sort of interface your board is set up with. Hypothetically, there could be pins on there for connecting to what would normally be the front of the computer case. Take a look at your motherboard manual and see what sort of connectors it has.

Edit2: I don't have Mass Effect 2, but apparently you can edit settings in an ini file (or some other sort of text file). I assume, being a PC gamer that you're familiar with this stuff. If not, make a backup of the file, and then start lowering values and turning things off (generally changing a 1 to a 0 and changing a True to a False, things like that).

Well, Ive been trying to get tiny7 working, but so far its really unstable. (like, networking worked fine. i changed nothing, and now It wont see my network, but XP sees it just fine.) So I havent tested it yet. I shall try later. I could install full win 7 x64. (I have discs, I really should)

And I was getting better performance than he was in that video. I had no stutter or anything. Looked excellent.

This board only has one connection that isnt used, and its for an onboard mic. Such is the downside of using a custom board.

Oh yeah! I totally forgot about Coalesced.ini! theres tons of settings in there. Literally everything is in that file, from weapon damage to Kelly Chamber's hair. And lots of video settings. I am going to edit every setting now. <3 you.

hey sam, can i also make one? Im pretty close to mako(michael) and would like to make one. I'll start near next march so i hope you can provide details on your project as you go

Certainly. Anyone who wants to can make one. I dont own the idea. I am just the first (to my knowledge) to actually start building one. I would also be happy to offer assistance.

Slight update:
I installed Dragon Age: origins. It runs very well. And I played World of Goo with only the touchscreen for control. it is actually incredibly playable.

Ive done some more system cleanup and such, cleaned up my registry and wiped out some viruses I picked up because I have every security feature disabled, aside from user discretion, and I visited some lesser known sites trying to get my driver woes fixed.

And i should be payed tomorrow. Which should translate to batteries on Friday or Monday. (But you know how that goes). At that point, all I need will be casing material, which I need to order.

Double post for great justice.

I got Oblivion working. (which I means, If I get this finished, math class will never be boring ever again.)

I also did not get payed. So I cant buy my batteries. Yet.

EDIT:
I got xpadder working for shortcuts. I can change volume, start the task manager, and switch windows by holding start and pressing various buttons. That is very acceptable to me. Anyone think of any shortcuts I should add?

I don't know about a shortcut, but having a button combo permanently mapped to being the Escape key could be helpful when in games and stuff. I mean, sure you could program it manually to a button inside the options of each game, but why bother, you know? Actually, mapping that to the Start button wouldn't be unreasonable. Other than that, well, I use CTRL-C and CTRL-V like crazy but I assume you could get away with just using the right-click menu via the touch screen.

Glad to hear you got Oblivion working. Have you tinkered with the ME2 ini yet?

I have Escape mapped to the back button. Then I have start so when I hold it, switches my layout to set two. When holding start, back opens the steam overlay, Rb opens task manager, Lb changes window (alt + tab) and Left stick Up/Down are volume control. And I dont have any onscreen keyboard set up yet, so copy/paste is kinda pointless in the now. When I get to text input, I will decide on that.

No. I havent been on my desktop. Its fully set up for ME2 modding. I have every mod tool out there, notepad++, Several ruby scripts for compiling coalesced's, and more. I dont really wanna set all that up on this PC, just to uninstall it later. When I do bother to get on my desktop, that will be the first thing I do, guaranteed.

How about Alt+F4 to get out of a jam quickly if your game crashes? I know you can use the task manager, but I know sometimes it can be hard to bring up if you're experiencing massive slowdown.

EDIT: Also, are you planning on putting one of those game front-ends on it, like the ones on MAME PC cabinets? I don't think it'll affect performance, and it'll definitely give the whole project a more professional look if its run on startup.

Hmm. Alt+F4 is probably a good idea. I shall add it.

And, I had not looked into a frontend. For now, ive been using steam with all my games added into it. It works fine. And, really, I dont care about professionalism. as long as it plays games good, and the hardware looks good, I wont be malcontent with a windows desktop.

Dang, you are good! Thats the one I wanted, but I wasnt sure what it was called. (I love the one on the archos 9)

Installing emulators today. Anyone know of an easy way to clone my DVD based games to my harddrive, so I can play em without a disc drive?

Get a no dvd crack or use an image mounting program(alcahol 52% free and dameon tools light are nice)

Yep, Mako's right. This is what I'd do: Put my disc(s) into my desktop PC and make images with MagicISO. Copy said images onto the portable. Mount the images with whatever program you prefer (I like older versions of Daemon tools, and also Alcohol 120%, but you could also use MagicDisc or a few others). Install game(s), download no-cd cracks and replace the appropriate files and you're good to go.

Isnt there a free software for cloning em into .iso?

I suck at virtual keyboard. but am rapidly improving. I am using comfort onscreen keyboard pro, for now. touchit used way more system resources than it should, so i switched.

Use imgburn to get image files(.iso) Use alcahol 52% or dameon tools lite to mount them in a virtual disk drive.
