For anyone who's used both abs cement or jb weld, which is easier to sand? I've been using abs cement religiously for every project so far, but this stuff is Heck to sand to down to a smooth finish.

Abs cement is no supposed to be sanded to a smooth finish. In fact it is impossible to sand smooth. Abs cement is basically plastic with acetone in it.When you apply it the acetone dries out of the plastic leaving it hard. But it leaves air pockets as the acetone dries up.

So abs cement should be used as a bonding agent , not a filler.

And no JB weld does not bond to everything. It is primarily a metal bonding epoxy. It will bond to some plastic , but there are much better Epoxies for bonding to plastic.

I'm sorry that this doesn't fit here, but I am confused. What is a good technique of making a smooth finish? What do you do hail?

Re: Worklog: The TriSixtyFource

Add main filler, be it epoxy putty, bondo, etc.
Sand with 100 or so grit.

Work your way up until it's relatively smooth, until you're at around 400ish.

Now add some bondo glazing and spot putty.

Sand with some 300ish.

Work your way up again until you're high as a kite. I usually make my way up to around 1600 grit for the smoothest possible masterpiece.

Re: Worklog: The TriSixtyFource

Try to avoid using bondo as any filler except for spot putty for very small low spots. The best thingas far as I know is PMC hardset filler and flex filler. They are made for car bumpers so no way in heck they will crack unless you abuse it a TON. hail, me, cndowning, and I'm sure a lot more people have used it and it works miracles :)

EDIT: I am on my phone right now so I can't link to it, but I will when I get home if no one else does.

I hope hail doesn't mind me spitting out the same stuff he's said, but for the most part sp is pretty right.
For the stuff we've said, you wanna use the abs cement to bond your plastics. Don't forget to use it on the inside, too. Use the SMC hardset filler to do most of your shaping for big things. The flex filler is good for when you are finishing up or have small things to fill, such as around buttons. Check out hail's finished threads\worklogs to see what I mean. The dark is hardset and the light is flex. The NCube one has a lot of pictures for it :)
Now since I suck at explaining that, hail will probably come in and correct/clarify the crap out of that

Re: Worklog: The TriSixtyFource

Yeah so my dad shows up and is like "Dood it's 10 o clock you has school go to bed kthx, o yeah you can take pics."

So here is a sec I'm going to give you guys some guts shots and I'll upload that video.

The reason I didn't last night is because it was going to take 6 hours to render so I said kfinejeez and went to sleep. The reason it isn't up now is because as soon as I got home I started working on the portable!

Everything splayed out:

As you can see, the charge jack(bottom left) and the power switch (bottom right) have had little to no attention payed to them. I was saving them for last but then....you know. XD

Everything is hotglued in right now. I'm planning on using the JB weld I got yesterday to secure everything in after I'm "done" with the portable.

And yes, world's smallest here I come!

Re: Worklog: The TriSixtyFource

You sure can't sneak the guts and a glue gun into your room so you can finish this? :gonk:

Plus you'll be up at leik 3 in the morning anyway.

Re: Worklog: The TriSixtyFource

Re: Worklog: The TriSixtyFource

That controller board really puts the size in perspective. Also, mono sound :gonk:

A handful of good Nintendo 64 games didn't have stereo audio anyway (F-Zero X, etc.)

Awwwww. :(

Oh well. WILL BE EPIC!

All this means is that I'm borrowing your belt for a month, and expecting competition this summer. ;)

Yeah, one speaker, both lines are tied to it though. Still awesome.
