Making my first real portable

Hello everyone,

Intro

I will be making my first "real" portable.
I say real because i have made portables in the past but they were either never 100% complete due to getting stuck, or me being too busy. I didn't know about the modding forums back then which i could have got help from. This work log is to show my progress and if i get confused or stuck along the way hopefully someone can help. I would say i am good at soldering but i cant do some the things the masters can do on the forum.

The Goal

I want to make this process simple and easy.
Not much soldering and put into a clean case.
I don't mind if it is thick, but it cant be so thick its uncomfortable to hold.
Tchay's Ccube case is amazing, it is so cool. But if he used a mod chip instead of a disk drive and included batteries to play fully portable it would be perfect for me. If i could make something remotely similar to his i will be more than happy.

Update 8/16/2014

Figuring out the specs, help appreciated

What i have bought and understand (in green) What I'm still deciding on or need help with (in red)
- Slight trim to rev c board
- 5.6" LCD Screen
- WASP drive replacement with Swiss auto-boot
- MEGAdrive v3 from badassconsoles.com
- Internal memory card on slot A (64MB/1019 Blocks)
If someone can point me towards a guide to wire up a GameCube memory card it would be helpful.
- 12v 6800mAh Battery Pack
- Speakers
Maybe someone can help me out here. I want a switching headphones jack but don't know how to wire one or what speakers to get. I also don't know if there is a certain headphone jack i need..? Any suggestions appreciated.

Other than the memory card and speakers i feel good about everything. Again if anyone can help with those two things please reply or PM me. When everything arrives from badassconsoles i will be starting. :D :D :D

Thanks man. I knew that guide was somewhere i remember seeing it but I forgot to bookmark it.
Do you know anything about speakers and headphone jacks?

In order to get audio from the Gamecube motherboard, you will need an audio amplifier. There are many that you can choose from. I personally use the one in the link below. It is tiny, has a simple volume control and it can get very loud if paired with some good speakers.

For speakers, I personally use the ones from an Iphone 4s in the link below. They're not only very small, but they are also very loud and clear. Their quality simply can't be beat for their size; particularly when used with the above amplifier.

As for wiring a switching headphone jack, you will need to follow the diagram in the picture below.

What you'll essentially need to do is wire the Positive lead on the Right speaker output on the amplifier to Pin 1 on the diagram. You'll then wire the positive lead on your Right Speaker to Pin 2.

Next, you'll have to wire the Positive lead on the Left speaker output on the amplifier to Pin 4 on the diagram. You'll then wire the positive lead on your Left Speaker to Pin 3.

After, you'll just have to wire the grounds from both speakers to their respective locations on the Amplifier and then you'll have to wire pin 5 on the headphone jack to ground.

If done correctly, whenever you plug in a pair of headphones, the audio connection for the speakers will be broken (thus muting them) and you'll then be able to hear the audio through your headphones.

Here's a link to a jack with identical pin location as the above diagram.

WOW. Thank you so much the way you explained it makes complete sense. Thanks for taking the time to write that :D

I live in the UK so i cant get the items from the links you sent me.
Would these be okay for me to buy?

It's no problem at all man. I'm happy to help.

Both of those items will be just fine. The headphone jack you chose will have a different pin arrangement than the one I posted a diagram for, but it is basically the same. I made a different diagram to make it clear for you.

Sorry for no updates. A friend who is also into projects like this bought mine off me half finished.

I got my items from badassconsoles.com

Wasp Fusion
Gamecube motherboard
Megadrive v3

I installed all these things and more.
Installed amplifier and speakers with switching headphone jack
Installed 2043 block memory card
Installed mini fans to cool system

I will be starting a new work log and instead be using a mega drive v5 from badassconsoles to make it a lot slimmer.

Sorry for just suddenly ending this but now i will be able to make a even better portable.
