Downing's 2nd N64p "The Nimbus 64"

Re: Downing's 2nd N64p

I say I'm not gonna for a reason! The grill tabs that are holding it on through the case are epoxied underneath the actual speakers. So I'm not gonna do it! haha

Re: Downing's 2nd N64p

So, I've been trying to think of a name for this system for awhile, but it wasn't till just now I was looking at my Avatar and a picture of the soon to be finished sytems when it clicked. "The N Cloud" was the first to pop into my mind...but I think I'm actually going to call it "The Nimbus 64". If that's already been used, let me know, I'll think of something else, but I think it rolls off the tongue nicely and it still can be called an N64! So that's the name for now!

So I made a Heck of a lot of progress yesterday, in which everything but the power is wired up. Man, I had no idea how much wiring was going to be involved for a horizontal system! On top of that that I got the cart slot relocated as well, so all that's left to do now is mount the board to the case, wire up the battery when it gets in next week and it should be good to go, barring any unforeseen idiocy. But, tomorrow I'm am heading to the Caribbean for a week, so I really won't be making any progress for at least that long, and the battery isn't even in yet, so were looking at probably the first week in May that this system will be done! Fingers crossed!

Alright, back from my Vacation! Been away from my projects for a whole week, but am back on track. Was kinda hoping my battery would be here for when I got home, but the Dang thing got rescheduled for Monday...Ah well, really doesn't matter as this weekend is going to be used to play catch up for all the actual things I need to do for work/school. But, things still look good and hopefully by the first week in May, the system will be running and functional. Updates soon!

Alright, well I've made a lot of progress tonight. Everything including the battery is wired up! The screen and system get power all on the first try! However, I get no audio nor video....which really defeats the purpose of the idea and without that working, I can't test the controller either. I'm fearing it is my cart slot, which if it turns out to be the case, with be the biggest beeotch to get at! What I would have done for a multimeter with continuity. But, my power is good and nothing is fried, voltages are perfect. But, I really didn't expect this to work on the first try, but hopefully by this weekend I can get into it a bit more...I really really don't won't to check the cart slot because lots of ungluing and unscrewing has to be done. But if you know what's going on with it, let me know, I'll give it a shot!

K, so I'm running into an issue. The system works with the exception of the video. All the audio, most of the controls and the power all work great, but for some reason the video does not show up. I've redone my cart slot, one at a time and tested it as I re-soldered the wires back into place. The strange thing is, I can't even get the diagnostics screen to show up. The volume button works, but the screen remains gray and the controls don't show up. This is what leads me to believe that this is a screen issue. The power and the signal on the screen are grounded to the board, cables are all in tact. How can I go about troubleshooting this further? I should be able to have this done this weekend if I can just figure this out!

Please elaborate. Did you say you connected your signal to ground or the ground from the signal out of the n64 goes to ground of the screen? Also try taking out and putting the ribbon cable from teh LCD to the screen board and putting it back in.

I'll try that, but what I meant is everything I'm sure is wired correctly. The ground from the screens power and signal lines are connected to the board.

IT WORKS!!!! Kinda....

Hahaha, well you guys were right, it was that little ribbon clip on the back of the screen, it get jarred around a bit I guess, but as soon as I popped the clip, it went back into place and it turned on first try!

On the flip side, nothing else works....hahaha! The stick is very slow and then stops working completely, haven't had a chance to try out the D-pad yet. The Left C button is working as are the A + B buttons, but the start, 3 other C and the stick need to be reworked some how. But at least I can test things now! Any words of advice for trouble shooting the controls? I'm pretty sure I know what the answer is, but maybe I'm missing something!

I think the wires are too long really. The ones to the C buttons and the, the stick and the D-pad are all over a foot. Wasn't quite thinking that one through when I wanted to work on it easily. I don't think it was designed to have that kind of travel to go from point a to point b. So we'll work on shortening things up a bit!
