Take a picture of your vac mold!

Check out the sig for now, I can't get the links for my pics on these computers at work, it blocks me! But the sig link, Downing's 2nd N64p has the very beginning of the project and plenty of pics of the vac mold, and table!

Re: Downing's 2nd N64p

Haha, thanks! Yeah, well I've got all the painting, clear coat and holes done. Now I'm starting on the button placement and the electronic aspect of it. Man, that case took quite awhile but it is completely worth it to have something as clean and cool looking as this one is! I'll be posting some more pics this weekend. I'm kinda pissed though that when I drilled the hole for the LED, I just missed center by like a millimeter, just barely enough to notice....but ah well.

As for the electronic side, I've got the system stripped and the heat sinks glued into place. I have to work on getting my battery to work, but if I can't than I've got to order a new one. But either way, it's coming along. I'm hoping to have this done in a month, which should be doable, but we'll have to see. Anyway, catch you all later this weekend!

Re: Downing's 2nd N64p

A word of advice for you younger hobbyists. When you get to legal age (or even now for that matter) DON'T DRINK AND MOD!!! A good part of the day was lost to bandaging up 3 fingers on my left hand after the Dremel cut wheel skipped across them in what would have otherwise been thought of as a "bad idea" to a sober mind... It's not something I would recommend, but on the bright side, at least I had an excuse for the sheer idiocy of the situation....

But moving along. I did still make progress! Everything is now mounted with the exception of the screen and C buttons. The Z, R, L, Control stick and D-Pad are all in place! Once I get the C and the screen mounted I'll post some pics, but I want to have that done so you can see a preview of what the finished system will look like.

But it looks sharp if I do say so myself! Not perfect, but spending the extra time on the case and really just planning out the next move makes all the difference in the world!

I did though run into a few problems that I didn't plan on, and that was the thickness of the speakers. I only had one place to put them and as it were, the mobo of the N64 was hitting them and not allowing the system to close properly. So I had no choice but to cut the board down. Not that big of a deal really, but what I'm slightly concerned about is that I had to take the 4th player control pads right off the board entirely. Though I don't plan on using them, I don't think there will be any problems with it gone. It's more an input then a circuit if I recall correctly.

Next all that's left is to wire it up, but I still need to see if I can get my battery to charge...if not, a new one will have to be ordered. But that's a project for tomorrow...my fingers kind of hurt right now. So anyway, hope a lesson was learned, I know I learned one. Power tools are unforgiving, treat them with respect and handle with care!

Forgive me for asking, but what does this "XD" mean? Still learning the lingo.

Means you laugh really hard. The X is your eyes squinting and the D is your mouth wide open if laughter.

Got it, thanks! Glad SS finds my misfortunes funny! haha XD!

Regardless, if I wasn't a dumbass than you guys wouldn't have anything to argue over in the first place! Credit where it's due man! haha!

Anyway, enough of that, back to the topic, don't wanna get too far off track with this!

Re: Downing's 2nd N64p

Alright, well here is the mock up with just about everything mounted. I still have to mount the controller and the N64 mobo to the inside of the case as well as the headphone port, but all the buttons the screen and speakers are done. I think I'm gonna have to remount the start button though, it's not working as well as I'd like.

I think this will be the last time I try to use tact switches as opposed to re-routing tracers, it's too much of a pain! It might work for the L and R buttons, but we'll have to see in the future. Away, here's the preview. Nothing is wired yet, but soon enough!

Re: Downing's 2nd N64p

Just mounting them. I probably should have used PC board, but instead I used some plastic from a Tupperware container, which helped for drilling the holes precisely where they needed to go, but the plastic just was not ridged enough so I had to use a ton of spacers to hot glue and stiffen them up. Just a pain. I'd do it differently next time, and it's working now, but having the buttons press right to the PCB of the controller just seems so much easier and if all I have to do to reroute tracers is solder wires to the PCB, than that seems like a much easier route to take.
