Downing's 2nd N64p "The Nimbus 64"

Hey guys, figured I'd keep a work log over here as well. I'm starting with my most recent post, but I'll be updating both BH and Mod Retro at the same time from now on. To see what happened before this, just check the link in my sig. Away,

Here are some pics. The bottom right hole on the front is for the start button, which I might have to fill and relocate because the speakers might have to go right there. But we'll see. Made some pretty decent progress this weekend, including the mounting of the cart slot. This is going to be as tight of a space can get without relocating the expansion slot as well, but it looks like all will fit with a bit of persuasion. Still waiting on the screen so I can install the bezel on the front. The rectangle hole on the back is for the controllers memory port to go through.

I think it makes it easier to keep everything in, mount everything without trimming or cramming, etc.

You'd better put a Dang good and big screen on this thing!

Re: Downing's 2nd N64p

I'm definitely an advocate of bigger case/screen over 3.5" or 2.5" and very very small. It looks great so far :)

+1

3.5" with almost any system seems a waste let alone an N64.

That thing is like as big as Bacteria's multi-video game portable system thing.

3.5's aren't to bad for 8/16bit gaming

But the most you're going to be reading on those screens is "But the princess is in another castle!"

Re: Downing's 2nd N64p

I've played n64 on my 3.5" screen and it's fine.

I'd rather have a smaller portable, like the x64 lite, with a 3.5" screen (not to mention longer battery life) than a larger one with a psone screen.

Re: Downing's 2nd N64p

Eh, in my opinion the N64 games are "bigger" in a sense that you know, the stories were longer there were real plots, more action, more could happen at once etc. It doesn't feel right to me to play it on a small screen; I'd much rather have it on something that I can see most every detail on.

Re: Downing's 2nd N64p

Guys, the system is only 7" W x 8"L x 1.5" T. It really isn't that big (the VrgeN64 was 8.5"w x 11" H x 2"T!). Maybe the pictures don't scale it well, but it fits very nice in my hands and very comfortable/natural to hold. Yes, It might be a bit bigger than some of the sleeker models out there, but I didn't want to trim the board or relocate the jumper pak, and this system allows for an internal cartridge load without relocating the pak. Extremely tight fit right now, but it does look like it will all fit. It is going to have a PS1 screen on it, bezel included because it has to be top mounted. Keep you posted, I'm hoping the screen will be in today!

Here are a few more pictures to illustrate my point!

As you can tell, there really isn't that much space to spare and my hands aren't that big to begin with. *no jokes, they are not true!* The screen is just barely going to fit assuming my measurements were accurate...(BTW remind me to post those measurements, they help out a lot in the planning phase!) But yeah, that's where I'm at. Doesn't look like the screen is going to get here today sadly, so I'll be waiting another day to get this done....ah well.

Re: Downing's 2nd N64p

Thanks!

Cool, so the screen came in today and I got the faceplate mounted to the case. I'm just waiting for the flex filler to dry and then a rough sanding. All that really needs to be done for the case now is to drill the speaker holes, the charging jack, headphone jack and switch mount. I was thinking of adding an A/V out and a power supply so it can be used on a TV, but I'm not sure I'm going to have the room. Anyone know of a topic that I can get more info on adding the A/V out and wall power switch? Be very helpful.

I also noticed that I might run into a bit of a problem with space though when it comes to the screen. I wasn't counting on having a big capacitor near the top as it a bit thicker than the faceplate and I need it to be flush with the case top. Can I relocate that capacitor by simply just extending the wires and moving it out of the way, or will the added length cause a timing issue? I'm not to that part yet, but something is going to need to be done. I'll have pictures up tomorrow when I get the rough sanding complete. Let me know when you get a chance guys and thanks!

Re: Downing's 2nd N64p

If its to the side of the LCD on the front of the board, (side with the buttons on it) you can just cut it off.

Re: Downing's 2nd N64p

If it's a psone screen, and you're talking about that big ol' 16v capacitor, go ahead and remove it. If it's any other screen, you can relocate the cap with wires, no problemo. Just try to keep the wires as short as you can.

Re: Downing's 2nd N64p

Remove it and you will have wavy lines on the screen.

It is a power supply filter cap. I have yet to be able to remove it without getting noise in the video signal.

But yes you can move it by extending the wires.
