There's a little switch to turn them on and off. I realized this was necessary after trying to watch Netflix in a dark room.

She started showing me the first episode when she was at my house on Thursday but we had to cut it short since my Dad came home. XD

The two-part pilot is good for intruducing the characters, but I wouldn't say they're the beat of the bunch. Plus, it has an adventure-based storyline while all the rest are slice-of-life.
If you can possibly stand it, I would also watch two or three episodes after that to get a real feel for what the show is pretty much like.
