So I went to a convention this past Friday with some friends. When we were not doing stuff at the convention, we went to places around city the convention was in to kill time. (This happen twice during the day.) Well one of friends who was with me. Knew all the good places to go in this city, which included the local Goodwill.
Well later in the afternoon, we were again waiting for something else to start at the convention. So we decided to go check out Goodwill. When we got there, I made a beeline to where the electronics/housewares section was. After looking around and not finding anything interesting besides some controllers. I started to look through their large stacks of electronic hardware. They had stuff like DVD players, VCR's, CD Players, and audio receivers in the stacks.
While I was Iooking though one of the stacks. I glanced to my left to see what was in the next stack. I noticed one of the devices in the stack had a Compact Disc Interactive badge on the front of the disc tray. It didn't immediately register in my mind it was, apart from the fact that it was not normal. It was enough for me however to investigate as to what this thing was. Looking at it closer, I saw the input port on the front. Then I realized what it was, and the model number on the front confirmed it. I found a CD-I, something I never though I would randomly find in the wild.
Specifically, I found a Phillips CDI 910. As for the price, It had a sticker on it for $9.99. But since the sticker was yellow, it was half off. So I got it for $5 instead!
It's in really good shape for the most part. There are some scratches on the top of the system. But being it was there long enough to be sold for half off. I wouldn't be surprised if they were done while it was at Goodwill. Another problem is that the tray doesn't close all the way when you press the open/close button. So I have to push it close the rest of the way, but I doesn't bother me too much. I also couldn't find the controller/remote for it, but I can one off feeBay eBay if I need to. Lastly, It didn't have the power cord either. However, since it does use the same kind of cord a desktop uses. That is not a problem for me at all since I have plenty of extras.
Anyways, It does seem to work just fine as far as I can tell. I got it plugged up to a TV in the house, and the picture looked clean. It also had no problems loading the Music CD I put in it.
The best part about all of this. Is that is that one of my friends who was with me, has also been wanting to get a CD-I. He walked by it at least twice (from what I saw), before I found it in one of the stacks. Needless to say he's jealous right now.

With a little bit of Wheelin' & Dealin. I got my sister old dead HP Pavilion g6-1b59wm "Dandelion Breeze" Special Edition laptop.
Originally, I thought the thing was dead as a doornail. It wouldn't turn on or even show that it was charging. We had a family friend who also looked at it that is an computer expert, and he thought it was dead too.
So when I got it. I took the thing apart to get an idea of how it comes apart. Just in case I wanted to fix it, and not part it out.
So when I reassembled the laptop after tearing it apart. I noticed the power connection to the mother board was loose. So I pushed it back in and put the whole laptop back together. Then being curious, I decided to see it it would power on. It started to try to charge, something it hasn't done in months. Then I went to try to turn it on, and it actually tuned on. A bios message popped up saying the battery was way too low and might need to be replaced. (I'll attribute that to being off for so long for now.)
So I closed out that message and got the usual options of boot into the various forms of safe mode or boot normally. I choose boot normally and got the log in screen. Just when I was about to enter her password, it died.
I'm going to order a new jack for it and see if that clears up the issue. (She did damage her ac adapter while it was plugged into the jack a few months before it died.) I'll also check the motherboard connection if the problem lies there.
Might get a working laptop out of this deal with minimal amount of money out of pocket.

My wife and I are turning into dumpster divers. There's a couple dumpsters along the route we walk our dogs. A few weeks ago, I spotted a 32" LED backlit LCD TV in one of them as I threw in a bag of dog poop in. Also grabbed a basketball that was in good shape. LCD ended up being cracked, but the backlight still works. Today we found what looked like someone's moving-away clear out. Lots of food and household items. Grabbed a big pot that was in good shape and one of those Scentsy candle warmer things. Not sure if I should be proud or ashamed.

I got a $20 XBox from the flea market. Controller seems chewed up and there are some scratches on top, but it works as far as I can tell (boots, recognizes video DVD, controller moves the cursor, there is save data).

Sega 32X and two games off eBay for $7.50...
Plus $27 in shipping. Living in Canada sucks. It's still fairly cheap however. No cables, but I can build my own link cable and I'm rigging up my own power supply system anyway.

just got a free LCD screen from the pizza place I work at. the chassis was covered in pizza dough so I decided to take it apart to clean. About 50 cockroaches spilled out.

Drove all around the great (mediocre) state of Connecticut the other day and got some good finds from retro game stores and goodwills.

Got a free ATI 5770 today. Not exactly great by todays standards, but should be a nice upgrade to my second box (6550D integrated). Still waiting for some games to copy over, but so far it seems like the card works perfectly.
EDIT: Works as it should, and doesn't get very hot at all.

I've built new mounts for them and I'm using one as a monitor right now. I have some HDMI cables coming so I can figure out if they're actually flax as monitors or if that's just the VGA messing with me. Also so I can plug my 360 up to one and hopefully start running triple screens.
