Wiikey compatibility issues?

ok..not a problem...
here is the most important (and current) information to know about general swiss compatibility and installation...(for portables with no DVD drive)

QUICK EDIT:
there are people at GC-FOREVER who are installing a WKF for the FIRST TIME EVER (using my adapter boards ) AND also successfully flashing WKF autoboot following instructions / information / video links i have posted there.

These first timers are not having any issues after following the directions and watching the videos...maybe only a few random questions from the non-english speakers..but for the most part, there has been great success thus far and very little issues..

Please let me know how to add or clarify the information i have posted below.....

Official swiss 0.3 iso's:
the official 0.3 NTSC and NTSC-J iso have issues due to the .gbi header file used. (do not use these)
the official 0.3 PAL iso will boot on ALL GCs with no issues

SD card format:
swiss does not support WBFS format.
swiss does support FAT/FAT32 format and tested currently up to 128GB SDcard.

WKF specific info:
to load swiss from official WKF firmware:
1. use v0.3 swiss(pal).iso only (should be fixed in next release)
2. after selecting swiss in the WKF menu GC will reboot.
3. when GC logo animation begins remove WBFS card and insert FAT/FAT32 card before swiss starts up (about a 8 second window to get it right)
4. swiss will display contents of WKF SD slot

to install swiss as initial iso from original WKF firmware:
see above "to load swiss from official WKF firmware"
5. within the contents displayed locate swiss.fzn
6. select the .fzn file to flash swiss
note: this will work from both WKF SD SLOT and SD GECKO SLOT

to install swiss autoboot as initial iso from original WKF firmware:
see above "to load swiss from official WKF firmware"
5. within the contents displayed locate swiss.dol (currently named swissflasher.dol)
6. select this .dol file to enable to flash autoboot functionality
7. remove SD card from WKF SLOT and insert in SD GECKO slot
note: or just use two cards one in each location
8. navigate to SD GECKO in swiss to display card contents
9. within the contents displayed locate swiss.fzn (and swiss.fzn.fw in the same directory location)
10. select the .fzn file to flash swiss autoboot
note: (currently) this will NOT WORK from WKF SLOT

to upgrade any WKF with previously installed version of swiss to newer version of swiss
1. turn on GC with FAT/FAT32 SD card in the slot, swiss will display contents of WKF SD slot
2. within the contents displayed locate swiss.fzn
3. select the .fzn file to flash swiss
note: this will work from both WKF SD SLOT and SD GECKO SLOT

to upgrade any WKF with previously installed version of swiss to swiss autoboot
1. turn on GC with FAT/FAT32 SD card in the slot, swiss will display contents of WKF SD slot
2. within the contents displayed locate swiss.dol (currently named swissflasher.dol)
3. select this .dol file to enable to flash autoboot functionality
4. remove SD card from WKF SLOT and insert in SD GECKO slot
note: or just use two cards one in each location
5. navigate to SD GECKO in swiss to display card contents
6. within the contents displayed locate swiss.fzn (and swiss.fzn.fw in the same directory location)
7. select the .fzn file to flash swiss autoboot
note: (currently) this will NOT WORK from WKF SLOT

i dont wanna sound like an A55hole with this next piece of information but:
watch my videos which show in FULL DETAIL every step of the process...
is the video too long? too bad
there is a reason why each video is 15 minutes+
because there is a lot of information to learn to clear up all these issues...

i agree with shockslayers statement about my videos being too long...trust me, if this was simple i would have only made a 2 minute video...but its not simple, there is a lot of new things to know and understand and even more now that we have WKF autoboot...

and like i said before, all the information i posted above only applies to portables with no GC/Wii DVD drive...
there is a whole new dimension of combinations and settings and instructions if someone wants to use a DVD drive with WKF on a home console....

PLAN TO SPEND 1 HOUR TO WATCH THESE VIDEOS IN THEIR ENTIRETY!!!
EVERY STEP AND DETAIL IS SHOWN AND EXPLAINED

Wiikey Fusion Autoboot with Swiss

I skimmed through, read the word ShockSlayer a lot in this thread.

For the record all I've actually done is test the veronica x iso Tchay sent me, as well as download what I think was the same iso and try again with similar results(a disc read error instead of a black screen, I always got past the first few splash screens though,) and the only other thing I tried changing was the patch level to "high" on the flashed Swiss I have as per something I think I read on the swiss wiki, aside from that nothing else really. I noticed it hung up right before the memory card message showed up on the screen, because that was the first "new" thing I saw when I loaded the .iso in Dolphin...I have never played these games before so I dunno.

Anyways, as far as flashing the highly sexy Swiss to the WKF, I merely said (to Tchay when we spoke softly into each others ears) I got tripped up on the "swap the sd card quickly before swiss boots up" part. Granted I'm pretty dense sometimes and perhaps rush a little, so... I figure since I'm real good at making guides stupid people like myself can follow, I'll try to do that sometime here in the near future for the masses: I'm gonna be installing one of mega's WKF boards and flashing swiss to my home cube sometime later this week, so that should be a good opportunity to get all this nailed down.

Great! That seems like an awesome guide thus far Megalomaniac :) Do I have your permission to add that as a guide in our Gamecube megasticky (with credit given of course)? And then we can keep tweaking it over time with new updates?

I had one particular question (and I know you mentioned it regarding the SD gecko slot and it's necessity), but my Envision does not have an SD Gecko slot.

Is there any way to flash the Wiikey Fusion firmware to always use Swiss......without having an SD Gecko installed? Or is my only option to always load Swiss as an ISO file each time I turn on the Envision? I'm going to try flashing the wiikey fusion just using the WKF slot and do some tinkering, but I was curious. I'd love for my buyer to have Swiss preloaded, but I don't want to open up the system and wire up a gecko slot (most of those vias are epoxied over by this point).

After watching the video again, if you successfully install swiss autoboot by following mega's instructions, it'll just boot into swiss when you have a fat formatted sd card in the WKF slot, no mention of having to use sd gecko.

Sd gecko was apparently only needed to flash swiss menu in a 1.0 firmware WKF.

Another reason for games not working on an SD card can be related to the quality of the SD card. Sandisk are great quality, but I lost mine over at Downings after the meetup. I never had any issues with games not working on that card, but now I am using these generic 32GB sd cards and I get an error after adding more than one ISO to the card. Apparently some SD cards are so crappy that getting even a single ISO file to run can be a chore.

Zenloc (loctronics) has told me that running a defrag program via swiss will fix this problem and make all of the games playable. But I went ahead and bought a Sandisk SD card and will do some tests on that card to see if I can skip the process of defragging altogether.

the answer to this depends on what you want to accomplish...

if you look at the instructions i posted, it lists examples for flashing swiss only and swiss autoboot
you can always flash swiss only from the WKF slot only but you will need to rely on the pin29 switch to load the initial iso upon startup...
or
you must use an SD Gecko to flash swiss autoboot

ShockSlayer said:
You cannot flash Swiss to the Wiikey fusion without an SD Gecko.

You do not need the SD gecko after Swiss is flashed.

SS
just a little clarification:
the only (current) available swiss_flasher.dol was a quick patch up to allow flashing the autoboot fzn & fzn.fw
..and this quick patch job works to flash only with a card in the SDGocko slot..
future versions of swiss might add the ability to also use the WKF slot also...
so currently, YOU MUST USE SD GECKO only to flash swiss autoboot

then after loading swiss autoboot, you will not need to use the SDgecko slot anymore unless (see scenario below)

yes, this could be possibly and im glad you mention this...
now lets throw out a possible scenario:

1. lets say you have a corrupt SD card and dont know its corrupt...
2. lets say you already have swiss autoboot and want to update to a new version of swiss
3. lets say during update flashing the SD card ultimately fails
4. lets say your WKF is now corrupt

now what??

you must use the 1.2 recovery ISO to restore the WKF with the card in the WKF slot.
then if you want to flash swiss autoboot again you will need access to SD Gecko slot

so until swiss is able to successfully flash autoboot ability from the WKF slot, an SD Gecko should be available for flashing purposes...

Should be good if we don't need a SD Gecko anymore, this would mean less tiny vias and casework to mess with.

...but why not include an SD Gecko in portables?
this almost sounds like if having an SD Gecko is a bad thing....and anyone new to GC portables may not know they could be limiting themselves by not having an SD Gecko slot depending on their intentions for use...

for example:
if someone wants to build a portable for both gamecube titles and the ability run emulators/homebrew, then an SD Gecko is required because emulators/homebrew do not support reading roms/data from WKF slot...

I love homebrew. Most all of the emulators are amazingly good, as well as it's easy to make sdcard -> GC memcard slot adapters to transfer data between the internal memcards and external ones, plus it's small too. You can even use microSD cards if you wanted to. I know I get requests for it every time I make GC commissions.

Is memory card dumping a swiss feature yet? I'd love to be able to back up my memory card on my computer. And it would be a lot faster than backing up every individual piece to another memory card.

SD Gecko's will always be useful, as the Wiikey's SD slot is READ ONLY. This is a hardware limitation of the Wiikey Fusion as far as I know, and will probably always be read only. Thus, I'll always recommend the installation of a SD slot on Slot B for portables. Its too simple a thing to implement than to not, and then kick yourself when you need it later for being lazy/stupid.

Ben, There is homebrew to backup game saves to a SD/PC: https://code.google.com/p/gcmm/

Its been a while since I used it but it works pretty well. I remember having to fiddle with different versions to get the results I wanted though. I transferred a bunch of saves from Dolphin to some of my memcards/portables.

Memcard EMULATION/saving to an SD Gecko is actually a feature included in the latest versions of Swiss, but I have not used it or tested it AT ALL yet. So I dunno if I should recommend it or not.

Thanks ashen, I've been thinking about making a thread with useful homebrew links in it. They'd link to gamecube forever first where the links are posted and with permission of the developer. I could make a couple guides to use them too.

Hi guys, I tested my wiikey and everything was ok, games loaded and worked wery well... but I tried something I shouldn't:
-I installed a Reset button, thinking that it would allow me to reset the gamecube and reload swiss and chose an other game instead of turning the gamecube off and on. But something happened: when I pushed the reset button, it's just the game that have been reseted (it started again just like if I loaded it from the wiikey).
-So I turned the GC off and loaded swiss, but on the selection menu it was like if the bottom button was lock (I couldn't chose the game cause the selection was going down alone).
-So I turned it off again, I tested my button but all of them were ok, and I reloaded swiss. And now, it's locked on "init wiikey fusion" :( .
-I restarted it few times, tried to use the reset button, but nothing have changed, it still locked

What can I do to fix it ? Please say me that I can fix it...

[edit] I've just seen that the topic is not just wiikey issues  Just respond here
sorry...

Wow, so I need to build a sd gecko to make it auto booting. Anyone know why the update doesn't work through the wiikey sd slot?
