The Xbox 720

will be 6x more powerful than the Xbox 360 and 20% more powerful than the WiiU, according to rumor and speculation.

Sounds cool. Glad Ninty will be closer in power this time around.

On another note, heres an intersting article about why the PS4, 720, and WiiU might be the last generation of console gaming.

It kinda makes me feel sad and creeped out thinking about it that way. Not sure why. I'm resistant to change though. I finally got a wii today. After all these years I finally own one. Bought it from Vskid3 for 25 bucks. I take along time to adjust to the new consoles, I guess.

With a continued exponential increase in technological advancement, however, we could see giant leaps in gaming in the next 10-20 years.

 Someone say it ain't so! Then again, that's like the difference between a GC and PS2 Xbox, so it probably won't make a difference.

Me too. *Can'tSayThisOnTV* the Onlive generation, it's up to us to keep the console business alive.

We're *Can'tSayThisOnTV*ed.

I don't put too much stock into the rumors of what it's power will be. It's rumored to be "20% more powerful than the Wii U" despite the fact we don't have any 720 specs, and only a basic idea of the Wii U's specs at this point. We're comparing dick-sizes based on conjecture at this point

Well IGN has some speculation about some of the hardware, but yes its pretty out there at this point. Guess we'll see how right they are in the end.

I've heard a few of those rumors, saying that it's going to be using a GPU similar to a 6670, and I hope to God that's false cause that's a flax card. It'd be really outdated by the time the new xbox comes out, and it'd be stupid for them to not go with something from the 7000 series which has a significant drop in power consumption.

Ha, well if it's just IGN then we have nothing to worry about. They don't know jack flax about hardware (or anything really), especially after that "Let's build a Wii U" thing they did last year.

I'm not usually too picky on console names, but I hope they aren't calling it the "720". Like, another complete 360 degree turn. They'd be going in the same direction. I'm still mad about Ninty going with "Wii U". And if Sony decides to call their next console a Playstation 4?

Fuggetaboutit.

That was one of the most cringe-worthy articles I had ever read.

That was a out-there article, but what exactly made it so cringe-worthy? I thought it was kinda cool what they were doing. But maybe I missed something. ?

Well for starters, a video game console is much more efficient than a PC because games are optimised for it, and it doesn't have to run a resource-intensive operating system underneath everything. Beyond that, the components they used are completely different than those used in the Wii U. The Wii U's CPU is based on the IBM Power 7 series processor (the kind of processor used for Watson), which is a Power PC architecture. The PPC architecture is worlds different from the X86-64 AMD processor they used to "build" a Wii U. They just said "hey, same frequency and same number of cores = same processor!", which is false even when dealing with the same architecture as there are different methods of implementing a particular architecture to provide various processing throughputs, but when going across different architectures it's not even comparable. The PPC processor is a RISC based processor, while the x86-64 processor is CISC, and honestly the architecture is outdated; PCs only use them because they're compatible with older stuff. There's a reason that no specialised machines make use of the architecture and instead tend in favor PPC, ARM, and various other architectures.

Also, as previously mentioned, a PC has to deal with an Operating System. They said "lol windows 7, extra gig of RAM will offset that"

And of course, they then compare it to an Xbox360. Not an "Xbox 360 PC", but a fully optimised Xbox360. And they make the comparison using games for PC and 360... games that were optimised for the 360 and ported to the PC.

I highly doubt that console gaming will cease to exist.

I'll bet it's an Octo-Core/Quad Core ARM A15 with some sort of ATI GPU.

A 6670 equivalent would be completely cheaping out, and would be a total douche move on the part of M$

At least a 7850. Come on.

Anyone have a link to that article? I'm pretty curious

Maybe they're trying to copy Nintendo by putting out weak hardware.

They'll screw that one up somehow...

No they won't, they'll try something ridiculous this year, and have a hardly modified Dualshock ready for E3 2013.

And the Dualshock is a rip off of the SNES and N64 controllers, so it dates back to 1991

The dual shock is not a ripoff of either of those. When the Dualshock came out it was revolutionary.

If you think the DualShock rips off the N64 controller by having an analog stick, you need to read up on video game history.

The original PlayStation controller was a ripoff of the SNES controller, which isn't surprising considering the Playstation started as a CD-addon for the SNES.

The Dual Analog and by extension the Dual Shock was a response to the Nintendo 64 controller including an analog stick, except Sony included two. Yeah, the second one helped a lot in the future and is now the standard, but just like a lot of things in the game industry, it's a ripoff.

It's not a bad thing, every company copies and changes ideas, but it's quite obvious why they went through 3 controller types for the PlayStation.

For what it's worth, Sony's first official analog controller was released in April 1996 in Japan, two months before the Nintendo 64.

And Namco's Negcon was released in 1995.
