This.

I used to use AVG, then I heard about Microsoft Security Essentials and switched to it (that update that AVG put out that made it so 64bit systems couldn't boot really helped). I can't really say how good it is at catching viruses (I prefer using jlee's method of not being a tard), but it hasn't been intrusive or anything.

Re: Browser Wars (split from Show us your desktop!)

Avira is pretty good as soon as you disable the pop-up that comes up in the free version after an update. Really though, as long as you have a decent anti-virus and are smart with what you do, you should be fine. I also highly recommend scanning smaller files with Virus-Total and/or Jotti's online scanner.

Re: The Software Preferences Thread - MY APP CAN BEAT YOUR A

Antivirus for the lose. I run none whatsoever on all but one of my PCs. (albeit, I only have 2 windows PC's, and thats my desktop with 7, and the PC-p which I only download steam-apps on)

On my desktop (win7 pro, legit copy) I have AVG 9 free. Seems to work quite well, and It doesnt slow stuff down much.

On the PC-p PC, (TinyXp, illegitimate, of course) I ran a malwarebytes scan after I got all the drivers and such installed, and I ran Uniblue registry booster. Then I uninstalled uniblue, and I only download things from steam, and have no other security at all.

And my other PCs all run various blends of Linux, so theres no worry there.

Re: The Software Preferences Thread - MY APP CAN BEAT YOUR A

Software preferences? Cool.

OS - Windows. It's stable on my PC and it's supported.
Browser - Chrome, cause it's fast enough and it has AdBlock.
Image Viewer - Irfanview, also my image format converter.
Image Editor - Photoshop 7.0.
Video Viewer - VLC Media Player.

On my tablet, though, I use Firefox because I'm left-handed. FF has support to move the scroll bar to the left side of the screen.

Re: The Software Preferences Thread - MY APP CAN BEAT YOUR A

OS - Windows Vista. I'm not a "Flamboyant Homosexual", and therefor, it doesn't give me problems.
Browser - Firefox 4.0b7 as of this writing.
Image Viewer - Irfanview, which needs *Can'tSayThisOnTV*ing APNG support.
Image Editor - GIMP
Video Viewer - VLC, with Media Player Classic + the CCCP for particular situations.

Re: The Software Preferences Thread - MY APP CAN BEAT YOUR A

On my desktop:

OS: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. New desktop at the time, why not the most recent Windows? Cost $30 since my Dad's a teacher and got a good discount.
Browser: Opera. Most stable and reliable in addition to using low system resources.
Image Viewer: Windows Photo Viewer. Stock, but it works just fine for... everything, really.
Image Editor: GIMP. Free, works great for shooping and enhancing stuff. My image converter, as well, since I only do one or two images at a time when I need them converted.
Video Viewer: Windows Media Player. Again, stock, but again, it works fine for everything.
Audio Player: Windows Media Player. Same.

On my laptop:

OS: Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. Mainly just needed an OS for my laptop since the Windows 7 RC on it expired and I couldn't find my Vista DVD.
Browser: Firefox. Stock, can't be bothered to change it.
Image Viewer: Whatever Ubuntu's image viewer is.
Image Editor: GIMP. Stock, blah blah.
Video Viewer: Not even sure. All I know is that .wmv won't work.

Re: The Software Preferences Thread - MY APP CAN BEAT YOUR A

I'm using Windows XP Professional SP3, with pretty much every setting turned down on low. All eye candy disabled. All unnecessary start up junk turned off. Trying to squeeze every last drop of performance out of this atom and GMA950 combo.

VLC Media Player
Firefox 3.6.12
Spybot Search & Destroy
CCleaner
GMABooster (So youtube is fluid and minecraft is slightly playable on my GMA950)
Sonic CD with patches so that it runs on XP.
Minecraft

I thought this was app arguing, not posting your *Can'tSayThisOnTV*ing software specs.

But we are arguing Software. By posting what we run, and what on, we say much more than simply saying "hurr durr Internetz explorer are teh bestet browser ever!"

Re: The Software Preferences Thread - MY APP CAN BEAT YOUR A

BUMP FROM THE DEAD SO I CAN FLAUNT MY LAPTOP!

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium x64 (legit, came with it)
Web Browser: Firefox 3.6.13
Antivirus: Microsoft Security Essentials
Media Player: MPC Homecinema with K-lite Codec Pack
PDF Viewer: Foxit Reader (though Adobe is still installed)
Image Editor: GIMP and XP version of MSPaint (don't like the new one)
Video Editor: Premiere Elements 4.0
Games (Steam): ME, ME2, HL2, CS, CS:S, DoD, BFBC2, RA3, RA3 Uprising, CoD4, probably others
Games (no-cd cracked): SH3, SC4, CnC Generals
Emulators: Dolphin x64 (actually works, played some Brawl), Project64 1.6, zsnes, Kawaks, VBA, FCEUX, and possibly Fusion

It is an Acer Aspire TimelineX 3820TG. I love it. Nice 13" size, portable, and quite powerful. Glossy screen reflects everything and the glossy bezel is covered in fingerprints, but the keyboard is quite nice despite the odd layout. It is actually faster than my desktop for some things. Good build quality, decent design except for the aforementioned glossiness (that being said, anything not glossy looks just plain industrial these days). Win7 is surprisingly quite nice, and every legacy app I've thrown at it works. I still mostly use my desktop, though.
