Surface soldering

How do you solder a wire to those battery PCBs? It seems that whenever I do it, the solder joint comes apart eventually even if it seems like a good joint. Is flux the answer? I asked my dad who doesn't have very much experience in soldering, he said spread the wire strands apart and solder to the surface using flux, but he said rosin core should be ok, so i guess I would like to know what you guys do!

Flux certainly helps, and don't use anything but rosin core solder for electronics - acid core's bad for them.

Also, standard soldering practices, etc. For instance, heating the pad instead of the solder, not burning the Heck out of the solder in the process, so on and so forth.
