Stock Heatsink (cut) + Stock Fan Combo

SHORT VERSION: Will this keep my GCp cool?

SLIGHTLY LONGER VERSION: I cut my heatsink (which took an unholy amount of time) and I plan on using a heat-resistant rubber band to keep it secured. It feels sturdy, but what I'm most concerned about is if this will keep the gamecube cool enough. Here are some pics:

It looks like you cut the heatsink right down to the base from that side view. Or at least very close to it. I can see the air having a hard time blowing past the fins if that's the case and you may have a hard time keeping it cool. Also, if you're mounting it inside of a case, you should just glue or otherwise secure the fan where the heatsink will sit. Using a rubber band is pretty shoddy IMO.

I would disagree. If the rubber band is really tight against the board, it could serve to hold it very well, and you'll probably have much better luck with that than trying to use adhesive on the aluminum. It's good to be able to remove something to modify if you need to.

Like naimlessone said, unless you lift the fan up a little bit off the base of the heatsink, air probably will not be pulled through the fins enough.

The rubber band will be fine but you're not going to get much air flow out of that setup. I recommend looking into a laptop fan that intakes from the top and spits out the side.

The rubber band is actually very tight, and I would rather use it than any adhesive for fear of a melted mess when the heatsink heats up.

And what about having it mount higher like this:

It may work. You should tape up the three sides at the bottom that are not facing the fins with thermal tape so that air can only move through the fins.

Ok, I'll go ahead and do that. Thanks all for the answers.

EDIT: A couple layers of thermal tape is stronger than I thought, I might ditch the rubber band.

You do realize rubber bands disintegrate, right? That won't hold up longer than a year or two. I think it would be at the same risk of melting/destabilizing under heat as any sort of glue.

I personally used a ps2 fan and I cut a horizontal slit where the stock fan used to be and stuck the exhaust right into the slit.

Well I guess that confirms my no longer using a rubber band... Excuse me while I apply 20 more layer of tape...

I personally use JB weld.

A $5 laptop fan is inexpensive enough that if it gets fried I don't mind destroying it to remove it from the heatsink and JB weld is incredibly heat resistant.

It works really well.

Where would I get said 5$ laptop fan?

Bentomo, first off nice wkf wiring, and second thanks for the visual on how you do your fan. I might end up doing something similar when I get working on my next one.
