Slimming the N64 board just a tad more...

Basement_Modder

He who mods in thy basement.
I just ordered some SMT caps: 50 220uf, 50 33uf, 50 68uf, and 50 10uf.

In case you didn't get it yet, I am replacing all the caps on the N64 board with SMT caps, making the PIF chip the thickest component on the board. :awesome:

I will keep this thread posted with progress. I am doing this on the P64 lite board, but I'd rather make an informative thread than bury it in a worklog.

Questions? Comments? Hate mail?

This will be very cool. Now if everyone could hardwire their expansion pack we'd be good to go.

[/hatemail] :dah:

Like what?

All I'm doing is taking off a bulky cap and replacing it with a SMT cap rated identiclly, so it serves the same function, but is smaller than the caps they had in 1996.

Uhhh, the caps on the N64 are SMT. The ones you are getting might be smaller, though. If it works out, it would be pretty cool.

With out p!ssing on your fire but is this not some what pointless due to the fact that you still need to put heatsinks on the processors and ram thus raising the overall height.

Please correct me if I am wrong though.

But even with a 1-2mm thick bit of copper over the processor its the same height as the currents caps on the board. (I've just measured)

Fine, how about this- you can cut off more board on the left side without the extra width of the video filtering caps.

Wait, those SMT caps are electrolytic that are on the board right now, and the ones on the back of the board are ceramic or disc capacitors. Are you sure they're interchangeable?
