Alright, so I built bruno's version and it's nearly the same. Left audio still doesn't work, but the amp gets louder and distorts itself. Also there is ascending and descending buzzing when turning it up and down.
My version works well with 8 volts. Or at least in my case.
What voltage are you using in your test?
Anyway the left channel is independent of the version of the schematics.
The 47uF capacitors you selected are massively oversized, overrated and overpriced. Generic 47uF capacitors will cost a fraction of the price and sound basically the same in this application. The 10uF capacitors are more sane but you could get a hundred that will work just as well for the same price.
Got an announcement to make, bud was right about the left audio signal, it does have to go to the lower pin. Turns out that the Right audio signal is played out of both speakers, which is how it fooled me.
