Redid a cheap turntable

Found a really cheap particle board turntable at Salvation Army for seven bucks, decided to give it some lovin'.

It looked kinda like this:

Repainted it and redid the speaker fabric with corduroy, now it looks like this:

Problem is, it's very quiet. I can almost hear the sound coming from the needle over the speakers at full volume. I'm not going to lie, I'm near clueless on why this is or how to fix it, so any help would be appreciated.

Considering that it's quiet it's not preamped. To fix this you can purchase a phono preamp or a stereo receiver with a phono input. Radio Shack carries a $100 Sherwood amp with phono input. I have one and love it. Would recommend.

Source: I have a Technics turntable with no preamp.
