Wait, I'm pretty sure it has mono audio and at least brightness adjustment.

No I owned one. It has two composite inputs hence the yellow and white rca's. And no adjustments at all.

Huh, odd. Well, you own one so I'm assuming you are correct.

I'll look into the six-button controller, but as for compatability, the Genesis 3 can't play certain games anyway.

I'm not sure if I can even fit all six buttons... but I'll see what I can do. If I use a 3 inch screen instead of a 3.5, I think I could squeeze one in. Plus the 3 inch I linked to is 10-20 less than the 3.5 inch ones.

Either way, because of the size, it'll probably end up with a 3.5 inch screen or a six-button controller.

EDIT: Meh, screw it. I laid out my design on paper, and I should be able to use a 3.5 inch and a six-button controller. It won't increase the size much, and Streetfighter 2 happens to use that controller. So I want it. Since I will be using a 3.5 inch, I'm gonna use this one that Life of Brian said can run off of only 5v. http://www.forums.benheck.com/viewtopic ... 30&t=33149

I'll just have some trouble making an audio amp. It sounds like the lm386 isn't too bad, so I'll try that one out. My system will use 6v after all! :o

The LM386 is common, and okay but not great. I have two TPA6021 chips from TI I'm going to play with. Kinda irrelevant, but I wanted to say it.

Re: Genesis 3 Portable Worklog

Mortal Kombat and Cutthroat Island use the 6-button. I believe some of the Street Fighter and Streets of Rage games do as well. The Lost Vikings uses all six, but it is playable on a 3-button. I don't know if you own any of those, or are at all interested in them, but I thought I'd just throw that out there for you.

Re: Genesis 3 Portable Worklog

Street Fighter II doesn't need a 6-button, but it's much better to play with one because with a 3-button puches and kicks are not separated. I'd imagine any sort of fighting game would be better with a 6-button pad.

Re: Genesis 3 Portable Worklog

Well, I used the audio amp from my hip gear lcd. My model genesis only outputs mono sound, so I hooked it up to right audio and when I turned it on, it was only as loud as earphones. :gonk:

I picked it up to experiment while it was still on, then it blared "SEGA!!!!!!!!!!"

In a few seconds, I found out by touching contacts with a wire that I had just bridged left and right audio. When I soldered them in place, and lowered the volume, it played perfect. From now on, I know left and right audio need to be bridged in order to output mono sound. Seems obvious enough in retrospect.

Thanks for that, by the way. I'm going for a bit of smaller case, so I think I will err away from the six-button. Since those games are still playable on the six-button, then I'll just use that. It's what I'm used to, anyway.

Also, I think I will call my portable the Genesis Micro. I used to have a gameboy micro, and I know my portable won't be that small, but I can't see anyone making one smaller than this. (Unless you solder your cartridge slot rcp style, and use a 3 or 2.5 inch screen.)

I'll have enough wiggle room to squeeze in four AAs, and hopefully somewhere for the audio amp. If not, I'll just desolder the pot, put in a resistor, and make the system 1 cm thicker. :(

Edit: Not Genesis micro, it looks as if this one will be on the thick side. Under 2 inches, almost 1.75 inches. Still small length x width though!

Re: Genesis 3 Portable Worklog

I ended up just getting all 6-button controllers. They come built into the Nomad, so I figured I'd stick with them. That, and I am a Mortal Kombat lady.

Re: Genesis 3 Portable Worklog

Yeah, I really like the sound of a six-button controller, but I know I won't have the room.
My case will probably be somewhere in the ball park fo 4 x 4.5 inches, and about the thickness of two game carts. Depends what I end up doing for batteries, and how I want the cartridge to insert.

What do you guys think? I'll post a mockup of my case in a sec.

The case front, nothing special, but is almost dead-on accurate on what the end result should look like.

This backing is the one I prefer, but it'll end up making a my portable 2 inches thick. It looks the best, but I won't be able to pocket my genesis.

This option makes it about 1.5 inches thick, maybe a bit less, and allows me to put bigger batteries into my portable. I can also pocket it, but not with a game inserted.

I would really like to know what you guys think. I like both, the first backing would look awesome, but I'd need to wear my shoplifter jeans if I wanted to take it with me anywhere. The second one will look okay, but will allow me to double my battery life and allow me to fit it in an jeans pocket.

Re: Genesis 3 Portable Worklog

I have made a couple of portables where the cart sticks straight down out of the back and it is VERY hard to keep the games from resetting every time you hit the cart or wiggle to much.

I wouldn't suggest it.

Re: Genesis 3 Portable Worklog

Like it, but I hate the cart sticking out like that. Hailrazer is probably right about it resetting too. If you do that make sure the cart goes in quite a bit and has some support other than the slot.

Also, like the design. It looks like there is room for 6-buttons if you do it right, but unless you are into fighting games it is not really necessary, just preferable.

Re: Genesis 3 Portable Worklog

Didn't think at all about the cartridges resetting. Thanks hailrazer!

I'll just go with my first option for the backing, then, and have the cartridge all the way enclosed in the system. I'm almost done making my controller, and my game Genie should be coming in any day now, Pics soon! :p

How many portables have you made, hailrazer???
4 portables completely built (N64,Dreamcast,Genesis, Goac). 2 in a state of being completed. (Snes,Nes,) And 1 being currently worked on (Gamecube).

Re: Genesis 3 Portable Worklog

:evil2: :evil2: :evil2: Sorry guys, this project is on hold. After all that hard work, I fried it. Got my game genie in the mail and tried a very hasty cart slot relocation.

I had it wired upside-down and backwards, if you know what I mean. It did not do crap when I turned it on. I redid the relocation, this time making sure it was soldered in the right orientation, and now it won't turn on. No black screen, no buzzing sound when I hook up speakers, nada. :gonk: :cry4:

I will probably tinker with the Genesis in the future, but after looking at all the Radica pics, I might try that one instead. Till then, I think I want to relax for a while, and go after another system.

Thanks everyone for your advice! :)

I've got a Radica's guts, if you are interested.

Re: Genesis 3 Portable Worklog

I probably will be next week, when I get paid. 'Bout how much you want for it?

Re: Genesis 3 Portable Worklog

Bumpie. I bought a replacement genesis 3, so I'm starting up my work log again. I'm gonna be careful this time!
