Well I guess I could, thanks for the tip.

Anytime. The best wire is IDE cable for basic connections, kynar wrapping wire for controls, and
24-ish AWG stranded wire for power. (or just use IDE cable and double it up. EG-6 strands, 2 go to +7.4v, 2 go to 3.3v, 2 to GND. I prefer this method.)

Re: Downing's 3rd N64p "The Nimbus II"

IDE is great. I'm using it for all the connections except power. Also, the double up idea is great!

Downing, what screw post technique do you plan to use for this project?

I'm not going to be using posts this time...no room and they are actually a pain in the ass when it comes down to it. So I'll just but using small plastic tabs and brass sheet metal screws to hold the two halves together. I'll ABS the bottom half of the tabs to the bottom half of the case, then drill, countersink and screw to the top of the tab. Should work out pretty well and save some room....hoping anyway!

Re: Downing's 3rd N64p "The Nimbus II"

So what zenloc did with his white n64 portable?

(that he still hasn't shared with us how he cut the psone screen mobo that small)

Re: Downing's 3rd N64p "The Nimbus II"

Maybe, I never actually saw how he did his. That guy's pretty crazy as it is....he'll be turning water into wine soon probably. haha

Re: Downing's 3rd N64p "The Nimbus II"

Finally a little bit of progress! Would have made it farther but my heater ran out of propane and I'm broke so I called it a day!

I basically got the fan mounted into the back of my case. Came out almost perfect, but was just a bit off center, but not very noticeable. I'll fill in the edges around it after I'm done painting the case.

Basically to mount this I took 4 little nylon spacers and tapped out a 6-32 hole in them. This allowed me to make actual screw posts so I can lock the fan into place. I found though that super glue and loctite 401 do not like to bond to nylon and HIPS. So, I basically just drilled a hole into the back of the case for the spacer to sit in, dabbed the end in ABS cement and then tacked in tight by melting the edge of the nylon and HIPS with my soldering iron. This locked the spacers right into place and when the ABS cement dries, they won't be going anywhere!

The next step will be fixing the part where the cart slot is. Gotta do a bit of redesign on the internals because my first idea isn't going to work out. But more on that when I get there. Hopefully this sparks a revival of the project!

Re: Downing's 3rd N64p "The Nimbus II"

Great idea on how you did the screw posts. I was going to do something similar, but... meh, I'm done with portables.

Re: Downing's 3rd N64p "The Nimbus II"

Gah, how did I completely miss this one? D:

This is looking amazing so far! Very smart idea on the screw posts there, as well. Definitely gonna be keeping an eye on this one. :awesome:

Re: Downing's 3rd N64p "The Nimbus II"

Thanks guys! You might have missed it because it's been hanging around on the 2nd page for awhile, just got back into yesterday. Like I said, real life has been a pain lately.

Re: Downing's 3rd N64p "The Nimbus II"

Made some more progress today. I've been having an issue with an over cut on all 4 corners of the screen with the filler not holding well. So I attacked it from another point and put little plastic cut outs over them. Once fully sanded, it will look like a continuation of the screen bezel...kind of a long story, but it will make the cloud like feature that much more apparent!

Also fixed up the back for the cart slot. Not the way I wanted it, but it still came out alright! More to come on that later!

Nice! Now you don't need to relocate the cartslot. I didn't even notice that your doing that. Cool.

Re: Downing's 3rd N64p "The Nimbus II"

Yeah, it's not the ideal situation, but there would be no room at all for an internal cart slot, so this will work. haha. I still need to solder every pin though because I had to take off the back expansion port. Not that big of a deal, but still takes time. But it's getting there!

Re: Downing's 3rd N64p "The Nimbus II"

Made quite a bit of progress today, even though it might not look it! But, I've sanded more today than I have on any project and I'm still not done!

Basically what's happening is that I cannot seem to find any mesh for a the protector that I wanted, so I got a bit creative and cut a new patch out of spare plastic that fit in the original hole, with the "N" logo cut into the patch.

I then put that into place and filled around/sanded the excess to it was flush and smooth. The fan still moves so that's good and I'll be using some of the screening from the PS1 screen speakers to go right directly behind the N logo so that it acts like a filter.

I also filled around the top of the cart slot so that there would be no gaps in the plastic piece that I had to put there. It's looking pretty good, but still need some more sanding.

I'm thinking this is going to have to be white...I dunno why, but I think that will make it look much better and will fit with the name.

Here are a couple pics so far!

The whole case with the rough sanding complete. Got a few more grits to go.

A closer look at the logo. This was pain to cut, but I think it was worth the struggle!

That logo is win. It almost justifies having a fan.

Almost. haha. I didn't really have a whole lot of room inside and the copper heatsinks I have are a bit taller than the stock heatsinks that come in the N64. So because I'm not using the big aluminum plate, I needed some other method to cool the chips. This seems like it should work as the fan almost sits right on top of the RCP.

What's really going to be cool is behind the fan I'm putting in a bright blue LED that should illuminate the "N" quite well. Still adjusting, but should be nice!

Re: Downing's 3rd N64p "The Nimbus II"

It's coming together quite nicely, man. I'm glad to see you're sanding it down a lot, it's going to have a nice finish when you're done with it.
