Not starting quite yet, but I will soon. Here's my design:

EDIT: I drew three start buttons, where should it go? Also needs a name.

Re: Bush's N64p

I think you should have the start button somewhere under the screen. It should be away from the other buttons. Or that bottom right spot.

Re: Bush's N64p

Are you RCP wiring? That + a flaxload of trimming is the only way you can fit an entire N64 mobo in an SL-68p

(meaning not like the TriSixtyFource.)

Re: Bush's N64p

I probably should have mentioned that lol. Im not RCP wiring anytime soon.

Re: Bush's N64p

The sizing on that 3.5" screen looks off to me, the screen in your drawing seems to small compared to the case if you look at the trisixtyfource.

Re: Bush's N64p

Don't decide where the start button is just yet. I bet it's gonna turn out that you're going to be putting it wherever it will fit. :p

And is that 4 player box plugging right into the bottom? Cool. Make sure you include some thumb screws to properly secure it.

Re: Bush's N64p

Thanks! But how would i secure it? The ports face each other and will be covered by casing

I would suggest looking at some DB15 (vga) gender-changers. You can get a M-M adapter. You can solder your wiring to the male end inside the case, and if you look at it, most of the adapters i've seen have had the screw posts on both sides, so you can take those out and screw them back in through holes in the enclosure, or replace with thumbscrews as Mario suggested. As for the breakout box itself, you should be able to do the same with that, except with a F-M adapter.

I don't know what you planned to do with that, but the gender changers would make it cleaner/neater and take up a lot less space inside the enclosure.

Re: Bush's N64p

I as thinking having a female port on the portable, flush with the system, and the enclosure have a male port sticking out, so that when it is plugged in, the two boxes are flush with each other. I wont be using screws because i want to make it removeable.

Re: Bush's N64p

Maybe mount the gender changer with the screw posts on the inside? you can use those to mount it inside the enclosure and that should make it at least fairly close to flush...

Seems to me you probably have plenty else to figure out before you get to this point. I'm working on my first portable, and i likely wont even bother with a breakout box. Maybe next time...

Re: Bush's N64p

I should say that I dont understand the need for connecting screws. Are you talking about screws to mount the ports or to keep them connected?

(ignore the fact that this is a DB9 connector lol)

you can mount the entire assembly, screw posts and all inside, and find small screws to mount them on there from the outside. I don't know what a more stable alternative might be. I would think if you simply glued it in place, it would come loose after a few uses, as it takes a bit of pressure to plug those in sometimes.

Re: Bush's N64p

How would the screws go through the entire breakaway box to screw into the VGA port?

Really-long screws?

Re: Bush's N64p

Ok guys we need to clear this up lol. I plan to mount ports to the portable and to the box. The two will be able to be seperated, and they will not be held together by those tiny screws, the ones that hold connectors together.

Re: Bush's N64p

haha, it's funny how bad we're all mixed up here. :dahroll:

I'm only talking about the female port he wants to mount in the portable enclosure. I'm saying he can mount the adapter on the inside (screw posts and all) and use tiny screws that go through the case and into said screw posts =P

The breakout box he can just attach/detach nothing special, but what im saying is, if you only superglue the female port into the main enclosure, there's a good chance it will come loose over time...

Re: Bush's N64p

Ok I think we are all on the same page now haha. I was planning to screw the ports to their cases and hot glue them.
