Ribbon is flax. I still use Office XP and I don't care about stripped functionality. Works perfectly alright to me.

My computer is practically a potato. Can it run Windows 8? Probably. Is there much to gain out of this piece of flax by updating the OS? Probably not.

Either way this was about Office XP (2002), not Windows.

Even my old first gen atom netbook benefited from running win7.

Re: A Cheaper Microsoft Office 365 Will be Launched Soon

8 actually does really well on low-end hardware.

Re: A Cheaper Microsoft Office 365 Will be Launched Soon

Aye, but not good on eyes, whether low or high end.

Re: A Cheaper Microsoft Office 365 Will be Launched Soon

Get a start button program. Seriously, it's great after you do that.

Re: A Cheaper Microsoft Office 365 Will be Launched Soon

Yus. I like Start8 but it's $5.

Re: A Cheaper Microsoft Office 365 Will be Launched Soon

Oh no, not $5... :/

Re: A Cheaper Microsoft Office 365 Will be Launched Soon

You know, when I first saw the start menu was gonna go away, I was rather annoyed. But I've been paying attention to my computer use recently, and I never ever use the Dang start menu. Nor do I use desktop icons. So I can't really see a reason to not upgrade to win 8. I should do it. Because 7 is old enough at this point - can't imagine running XP, godDang.

Re: A Cheaper Microsoft Office 365 Will be Launched Soon

If I need to open up something on the desktop, I go through the file manager and open it as a folder 100% of the time.
I have the programs I actually use pinned to the start bar, and for the most part I never close them.
When I do use the start menu, though, I don't exactly want it to take over my screen. That's like... the reason I don't use the desktop and use the file manager instead.
The real reason I'm not running 8 is that I don't care to go through the effort of installing it.

Re: A Cheaper Microsoft Office 365 Will be Launched Soon

My laptop came with Windows 8. I use the Start Menu all the time, so I installed Start8. It was usable, but Win8 has lots of little quirks that annoyed me and I eventually got fed up with them and installed Windows 7. Oddly enough, I noticed improvements in battery life and performance. To be fair, I never updated to 8.1, so I can't comment on how improved or more broken it is.

Everyone uses Windows differently, so we feel differently about the changes in 8. And that's the biggest problem I have with the direction Microsoft is going in. Windows used to be, well, not open, but at least flexible. You could use it how you want. Now Microsoft is taking an Apple-like attitude of dictating how you will use their OS.

Been there, done that, sucked ass.
XCVG basically got my sentiment.

Re: A Cheaper Microsoft Office 365 Will be Launched Soon

I prefer StartisBack over Start8, since it doesn't use any background processes. I believe it's different for Windows 8.1, but I've never tried it.

I never had a problem with not having a start menu.

That said, 99% of the time, when I launch a program I used to go:
[start]->'C:/g/steam.exe'->[Enter]

Now I just go:
[start]->'st'->[Enter]

But I use my taskbar on the left though, so I guess I'm *Can'tSayThisOnTV*ing weird.
