uXeBoy - a NES Control Pad in a GameBoy! (Crowd-Funding)

Ignore Prog. This thing is pretty cool, and I would definitely donate if I had funds available.
 
Well, I won't ask "why" 'cause I guess it's none of my business, but I will ask: why not carry the concept further and mount a NOAC to it, and provide traces for audio and composite vid out?

Now this would be something that would be really cool to see.

I still think that this is a cool product, it just has few uses.
 
What did the GameBoy use for its buttons? Did it not use a shift register as well? Or was it just a direct connection per button? I can't seem to locate a GameBoy of my own to check. Off to Google I go...

The point I'm making is why not just hack the board already in a GameBoy? Maybe I'm missing the point.

The GameBoy used diodes for its buttons - the circuit is shown in the lower-left corner of this schematic:
