Upgrading PS2 memory card NAND?

DEMON PIE!
I opened up my memory card to see what kind of memory it uses. This is the part:

I have found an extremely similar chip, made by the same manufacturer:

Could I possibly just use a heat gun and swap the old memory chip out for the new one? This would give me eight times the memory, still using "original" parts. It should prevent me from ever getting a corrupted memory card, but with the advantage of higher memory like third party cards.

Why in the Heck am I even asking? I should just try it, and post results.

Is the pinout the same?

EDIT: Is there a controller chip or is it wired right to the PS2? We need jlee in here!

Probably won't work. The second one has a different pin count (44 -> 48). Good try though. There might be a larger chip in the same package size though, so keep looking.

Considering neither one of those parts are in stock, you'll have a hard time using digikey as your source.

In any case, there were no datasheets to be found on either, so can't really tell if the pin assignments are even the same. Also, not sure how the PS2's memory card works - I should go downstairs and nab my already-open memory card.
