You are missing the point.

Doing this will screw things up majorly.

It will not. It will allow the portable to be charged when the switch is not flipped to the charger. With your switch diagram, if the only way the charge power can get to the batteries is through the switch. That means you have to flip the switch that way to let it charge. With my switch, it can be charged at anytime, even when the switch is in the middle.

With your switch, it will charge them through the lead that goes directly to the batteries from the charger, and the one that goes to the switch will just stop there since the circuit is open and it has no where to go.
