N64 laptop

Can your screen run on less than 12v? If so, you could use a lower voltage regulator. And you can just hook up the N64 12v line and the 3.3v regulator to the battery, they don't need 12v.

That's a great idea! :)
The 12v regulator I have anyway is huge, so I'll try and find a lower voltage regulator and solve two problems at the same time. As for the screen I will be bringing it to my school soon and I'll test it out at a lower voltage.
Thanks for the help vskid3!

You could, but the input voltage of those has to be 1-2v above the output. Not to mention how inefficient they are. A switching regulator is much better.

Decided to stick with the bigger regulator I already have and instead of keeping everything in the original cases I'm going to modify an old mastercraft case for the project.

I wired up a connector to the 14.8V 6.4Ah battery this week and wired up a connector to the input of the 12V regulator. Still have to solder some wires from the output. Might get some more done tomorrow but, I'll be spending most of the weekend on the project as well.

Also I charged up the battery and it took a full charge. I've had this battery for awhile and never had charged it so this made me very happy :)

here's some pictures.

I powered it up and everything is running fine off 12.2V the only problem is the video isn't working . I think I have to connect a ground from the n64 to the screen for the video then it will work.

When i plug the n64 into my tv the video and sound work fine but, when I wire it to my screen I get absolutely nothing :0 its starting to drive me crazy I feel like I've tried everything! Does it matter the gauge of the wire for the video wire?

Gauge shouldn't matter. Did you ever connect the N64 and screen's grounds? Have you tried the screen with another video source?

It must be some kind of grounding issue. There both being powered from my battery so the grounds for both are together there but, I've tried connecting the ground from the av port to the ground on the screen and that didnt work either. I know my n64 is working properly cause it works plugged into my television. This is driving me crazy :0

The monitor has 3 video modes (vga, and two composite). All of them come in through one vga cable (which then split off to the two composite inputs, power supply and vga connector). which is making me think that maybe theres some kind of ground missing since the end of the cable has been chopped off which may have disconnected a ground.

I redid my wiring and made real solid connections and Im still not getting any video on my screen. Im wondering if the screen needs to be grounded seperatly from the n64 somehow. Maybe it uses the ground to switch between the video modes but, since all the grounds are the same it isn't working? Im not sure about this but, I have no other ideas on what it could possibly be.
Here's a picture of wiring a bit more nice and tidy.

Yes, Connect ground from the N64 mobo to the ground wire for the screen, or wherever it goes. All grounds need to be linked for things to work properly.

Should all the pins on my monitor that have continuity with my ground be connected? There seems to be a ground pin for each of the video inputs (vga, av, av). All these pins seem to be already connected to the main ground on my monitor.

If they have continuity then they are connected. Are you sure the screen works/that you have it wired up right?
