Awesome. I've been meaning to build a reprap over the summer too. Kinda wanted to build the "portable" Huxley model, since that's what we do here, but with the printing area too small I'll probably end up building the Prusa Mendel instead.
PLA has tendencies to clog and not stick to the bed as easily. I clogged once and have been able to handle it since but ABS is also better for making portables. And you can acetone vapor wash it.
