iPod Touch Screen Broken

My 2G iPod touch screen is cracked, on top of that the touch screen does not work. What do I have have to buy/do to make it work? It turns on. Also, what does the digitalizer do?

If you take it in to an apple store they'll fix it for free. I had a 1G a while ago and they fixed it for free even though my warranty was up.

And that is why it sucks to be me. I had a broken one before I got my 5th Gen Nano and there are no Apple stores anywhere near me.
