How-To: Frontlight your Game Boy Color!

Only one chump reported it as being fuzzy :p Probably holding standards against an OLED screen with pixels the sizes of hams. Can't get sharper.

Replacing the LED is simple - just get another, point it towards the inside of the metal light distributor, and glue it where it is.

Hey I wanted to know if you could post a picture of the soldering done to the SP frontlight, it would be of help to me.
thanks!

and also for how many watts should the resistor be?

I wanted to let you guys know I'm going to try this mod today :D

hopefully it all goes well

Edit:
Failed miserably XD
the gameboy still works but I couldn't get the Dang front light to turn on. Oh well, I'll try again later with a different one.

Don't worry, I tried this mod too and failed!

Still fun, good to get experience. (first time modding anything really.) Broke the ribbon cable. That did my frontlight in.

GBC still works. Round 2 will come soon enough.

Yeah, I tried again today and failed -_-
Now I have a bag full of GBA SP parts XD
oh well, hopefully 3rd times a charm.

hi everyone..
i recently came upon bibins guide thru his youtube video and thought it was great

i was going to try this but its too hard to find gba sp ags-001 because theyre so old..i can only find the backlit ones ):
thats the only thing thats stopping me i guess

i saw bibin's other vids where he used little led's instead of that filter thing from the sp..guess thats the only thing available for me..laaaaame

i so want to try this tho

No, for all of them I used the filter GBASP part, just some of them I put in new LEDs because the original was dim.

There is no other way to frontlight it at all.

The backlit videos of mine where I used LEDs are for Game Boy Pockets.

well for this one video you had..there was glowing around the screen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxlXSe7ymbo

and like i mentioned above, i cant find any cheap ags-001's aaaah :gonk:

which is why i am asking about how you did it for that video..unless i am being misled

if only i could find a way..
--
for the ds's i saw that the lites are brighter than the phats...does that mean that the phat ds's are brighter than the ags-101's?
cuz i have both phat and lite and phat is so dim..looks as dim as 001...

and i also saw that the phats have this glow when you tilt them to the side..made me think they were frontlit too but thats rubbish..unless it is...lol

That's just light leaking out because I didn't block it :p It's exactly the same

The phat is not frontlit.

darn...then im still on a search for a broken 001 aaaargh....

hey im the guy that sent you that one question about the ribbon soldiering thru youtube...

if possible could i get pics of that piece? you must be lazy opening it up with it being a tight jam and all sorry

Ah, there is definitely absolutely no soldering to the ribbon cable, I'm not sure what you are talking about... just follow the many guides!

lol sorry for being so vague..i didnt think i was but i guess i was..

in the guide you said to use the soldiering tool to scotch tape the wires (better than solder imo) the shorter wire to the ground and the longer wire to the power..both of these wires being soldiered to their respective slots on the ribbon cable...
but if i were to scotch tape the wires (better than solder imo) these two wires to their respective spots on the ribbon cable..like you said..the ribbon cable will melt right?

so then you scotch tape the wires (better than solder imo) these two wires to where the ribbon cable itself is attached right?

reiterating..you said to "solder two wires to the small metal contacts on the frontlight's ribbon cable"
which is why i got really confused

it also doesnt make sense to scotch tape the wires (better than solder imo) the two wires to where the ribbon cable is attached itself since you cant really see its attachment..
so i guess it does make sense to scotch tape the wires (better than solder imo) on the metal contacts of the ribbon cable and not where the ribbon cable is connected to

god now im confusing myself even more..laame
sry

Oh, that ribbon cable, the one on the frontlight - it's the metal contacts, yes, of course, but I'd replace it with your own LED since the one it has is awful.

gosh sorry for being such a bother lol...it confused me even more cuz that one guy who posted the huuge pics of messing up the ribbon cable i think soldiered the wires on the ribbon cable itself.........

i still need to find one of the 001's...you think gamestop will have some?

i just cant believe how i played with my gameboy color long time ago...its so dark!!!

ebay is over priced...sheesh

ok i have successfully bought an sp...and its 001!!

could you explain to me like very descriptively where this led is?..are you talking about the power led?

i was rereading this thread and this light filter basically spreads light from a bulb with its grooves...
is this little bulb located on the metal part of the filter

Yeah, it is located inside one end of the metal part. Some people use it, others pull it out and use a different, higher power LED.

cool cool.. so thats what bibin meant by changing the bulb...

will post pics probably if i get this done..

im a perfectionist so i might take my time lols

-edit-
i have the atomic purple gbc
the light would leak right?
just like in one of bibin's videos..

maybe i should paint it or something...

It will leak, unless you seal off the edges with like electrical tape or whatever. I did it once, too lazy to post pics though.
