These are not all the ones I have. Jlee, wanna make a big post explaining HMDs? :p

First off, my Virtual Research V8. Airforce surplus, used in the mid-90s for fighter jet training simulations. Got mine from a a good place, for a good price. ;)

640x480, adjustable IPD and focus, 65 degree field of view, 3D capable, motion tracker, Senn HD25 audio modules.

Control Box:

I will take pics of me wearing it sometime.

Next, my Liquid Ocean MRG2.2. Display unit at CES for several companies. I am currently installing a new 1280x800 panel in it, which is ABSURDLY high for an HMD. 95 degree field of view, about the same as a 400" screen 5 feet away. Right now, I threw a PSone LCD in it to replace the flaxty old 240x240 VGA panel. This baby is my upgrade fetish. Expect to see some cool pics in the next month when this thing is done, it will beat the specs of any sub-$20,000 HMD on the market. Again, I will have to get pics of me wearing it sometime, I need help for that.

This is a custom one, too, obviously WIP. BlackShark optics combined with VR920 guts? Sexy. 47 degree field of view, nothing this small under $1200 matches it.

I have even more, but those were the only ones I had pics of lying around on Facebook.

Palmer, if you wouldn't mind, could you explain what the first one is and actually achieves? Looks really cool though!

The first pic, or the first set? The V8 straps on your head, and immerses you in a virtual environment. That box is the control box, it is needed to power and process signals for the helmet.

You and me should go head to head to make the best 100% from scratch HMD.

As in, not gutted old ones or modified ones.

From scratch, must not contain ANY parts from another HMD or HMD Accessory.

The optics and guts of the MRG2.2 are all stock parts. I bought a gutted, broken MRG2.2 for really cheap, I am just using it as a mount.

See the light cover around the first phase lense? That is from welding goggles. :p So it really comes down to a fabrication contest. ;)

Me and another guy on an HMD forum are pretty much the only people on the internet working on DIY HMDs right now, we are both using the same optics and LCD, he just mounted his in a VFX1 shell:

I suppose it really depends what you're going for.

I for one do not like wearing helmets bigger than my skull.
