GBC Speaker Not Working

I could sit here and bore you with a frigging long post, but, I wont. Long story short: I have a gameboy color that I bought off eBay, the speaker doesn't work, but the headphone jack works flawlessly. I can send it back, but if it's a quick fix, I don't want to. Ideas?

Thanks,
Señor Kiwi

Get a cheap speaker to replace it if it is actually broken.
Try reconnecting/resoldering it first.
No need to send it back, worst comes to worst I'll buy it from you ;)

That's what I was thinking. Before I do that though, I had read somewhere (most likely around these boards) that you can dip a headphone jack in rubbing alcohol, insert/remove a few times from the GBC and it will help unstick the switch that changes audio outputs, is that safe? Or would it be harmful/a waste of time.

You seem to have made a mistake in your post... I corrected it in blue :ninj:

Edit: Hehe, just kidding. But seriously, I would like to try free before I try cheap :)

It is safe to do.
I recommend holding the head phone jack under the rubbing alcohol for 4 or 5 minutes then put a tooth pick in the jack and move it around to collect any "gunk" in there.
Then air dry it for an hour (make sure the board it hanging with the headphone jack down.
then blow dry it for 10 minutes.
then let it dry again for 10 minutes.
Make sure it's dry.
then test

Chances are the speaker is just disconnected. Nobble bought a Gameboy of some guy and he had the same issue. He opened it up and the thing wasn't even connected to the Gameboy's PCB.

Kiwi do you have the gameboy taken apart?
If not I highly recommend you take it apart before cleaning the headphone jack.

I take it you just want me to make sure it's dry?

I will pop it open either later tonight, or sometime tomorrow, and poke around to see what's up, because I would love for that to be the situation. Less thinking for Kiwi.

I haven't yet, but that will commence soon.

I hadn't played a gameboy in years, I forgot how much fun they are! Not to mention how dark :stare: the screen is... Good thing I ordered a 50 cent wormlight to hold me over until I find my broken GBASP ;)

Frontlighting the CGB is a pain but so worth it :p
Definately. I mean, jesus, how in gods name did I play this game system for hours on end!? I guess I am losing my eyesight... I mean, I shouldn't be, at 15 years old, but it sure seems like it.

Yeah, well, the opening is going to have to wait until tomorrow afternoon for 2 reasons:
1) I am tired
2) I have finals tomorrow and just finished studying
3) I want to have something to play with when finished with finals.
4) I am tired.

Dang. 4 reasons... Whatever :)

So I popped it open, and everything is connected, so I guess I am just gonna need a new speaker. What kind am I looking for?

Gaming brings people together. When I finished my gym final today (yeah I know. stupid. 90 question written exam) I was playing Pokemon Crystal (my favorite) and nearly everyone else in the gym ended up crouded around me, and they are all icky ghettoooo people in my gym class :) It got to the point where I had to stop playing because they wouldn't leave me alone enough to see the screen.

Which reminds me... I really need to backlight this :)

I just had the same problem and finally got around to fixint it today. I took an old PSP 1000 speaker, desoldered the old speaker in the Game Boy, and soldered the PSP speaker in, like this. After i had gotten the speaker installed i accidentally hooked up the power backwards, causing a small diode to burst into smoke, but removing it and creating a solder bridge fixed that. Good thing nintendo put that there! :dahroll: I would have replaced it but i didn't have any diodes that size rolling around.

edit: Sorry about the image size, its huge for only being 5MP o.O
edit: I couldn't get spoiler tags to work so i made a gallery that you can go to.
