BendDesk

Re: Guys, I just came...

Neat, but impractical. I like my physical keyboard, thank you very much.

Re: Guys, I just came...

Well it's not like you couldn't use a keyboard. And how is it impractical? i was just thinking how great it would be for video editing.

Re: Guys, I just came...

They said so in the article, and it's damned obvious they've never edited video. It's not as simple as dragging clips onto a timeline in the proper order. Clips must be split, trimmed, and often adjusted. The touch screen would be decent for control sliders, but simply not precise enough for a lot of tasks. For example, even something like a mashup requires frame-level precision. I suppose you could use a button or fake shuttle/jog, but that's not really significantly different from what exists already. Hmm, that's giving me a project idea. Anyway, not precise enough for real video editing. Sliders suck even for stuff like colour balance and volume. I suppose it would work for you average vacation video maker, but it would only be a little easier and a lot more expensive.

What else? Some types of games, but nobody's going to develop for it unless there is widespread adoption. Sound design? Don't know a lot about it, but I suspect the story would be similar to video editing. Photo editing? It would have to work with a stylus. I suppose it could be used for layout, but again we hit the precision wall. Usually objects have to be specific sizes and aligned. Re-reading, the BendDesk has terrible resolution on both input and output. 3x640x480 input resolution and two 1024x768 displays is pretty low.

My main concern is that it's cool and would work for some things, but expensive and not really much better. It will probably remain a cool toy and not much more. BendDesk is neat and could do some pretty cool stuff, but it's not revolutionary by any means.

Re: Guys, I just came...

I don't see how this can't be used simply as a touch monitor. Maybe theirs at the moment cannot, because they have not written the software (driving 2 projectors and eliminating the overlap, etc.). You could plug your computer into the monitors via VGA and the camera's via USB and a keyboard and use it for everyday things (assuming there is software that supports it to run in such a way). Besides, this concept had just been thought of and can adapt to use a capacitive screen rather than LED's and a projector.

I'm not talking about this exact thing, I'm talking about the concept.

So it doesn't perform perfectly or up to your standards. But the idea is extremely revolutionary, seeing as they got it to work. The BendDesk is just a prototype, if you will. Other people may come up with more effective ways of making this work.

Re: Guys, I just came...

It's most likely not going to be a portable thing... It will probably be a desk-type unit, hence the name.

Like I said, it's neat but not revolutionary. It's not going to change the way people do computing any more than the iPad. Do I want one? Of course. Do I need one? Heck no. Would I buy one? Probably not.

I fail to see how using that would be significantly better than a simple touch screen. The problem with any sort of touch device is the lack of tactile feedback. I heard they are working on that, though.
