Windows 7: Un-mutes when volume dial is touched

I have a Toshiba laptop which has a dial on it's front, just below the trackpad. Problem is, when I mute the device, any touching of the dial unmutes it. This is undesired when I want it muted and it's resting on my lap in a moving car as it gets unmuted when the dial brushes on my lap.

Any way to keep the mute locked regardless of the input on the dial?

You could go the hardware route and simply plug in some headphones. Or, cut the jack off an old pair of headphones and use that.
