Basically you need a smart charger that will provide enough amps to power the entire portable and charge the batteries at once. Most smart charges don't provide enough amps.
You don't need a second cable. You just need to build your power brick and charging brick in to the same enclosure, and then run 3 wires to your portable instead of just two. 8.4v Charge, 12v AC, GND.
personally, i used SS's diagram and two chargers with different jacks so you cannot physically put one charger type into the other, reducing the chances of frying your portable somehow
Personally, I like to use 3 position slide switches. On-Off-On to be more precise. That way, one direction can be used for battery, and another for DC power.
