Cutting +5v from controller ports

I'm looking to add controller ports onto my gamecube portable, and I'm pretty sure I can live without rumble. To maximize my battery life, can I cut the +5v line from the controller ports without any nasty side effects? Thanks!

According to Bentomo's controller notes in the Gamecube mega-sticky, you dou not need 5v line if you don't want rumble and don't want to use a wavebird wireless controller.
