Best console to portabilze for a novice?

First off, hi!
New to the whole modding thing, amazed by some of the tech on here. Eventually I would like to make a Gc portable but I can imagine breaking several things and, well money doesn't grow on trees. So I imagine the best way is to start out small! And so the question is what console is best for portabilizing for a complete novice like me?

For the complete beginner, NES clone or SNES clone.
A step up would be their original counterparts.
Another step up would be N64, followed by Gamecube.

If you want to start really really small, you could just get a PMP of some kind, throw it in a case and solder on a Nes controller board. BOOM! A recased portable Nes emulator. If not go with a Nes clone.

I must say that ESPN NHL Hockey (2K4) is my favorite though.
