Get a pinout and try adding a bunch of resistors between voltage in and GND and see if it will run it, like how the DS will run if the place where the backlight is connected is drawing power.

What if you have something like a modchip or Sundriver connected?

Those all fully emulate the disc drive being present. Sadly, it is more complex than just bridging some pins.

i can confirm this. LED modded my wii yesterday and decided to test it to see if it was just his wii, no VC channels booted. just froze after i opened one
