What are neat softmods for the PS2? (No pirated game mods)

I DO have an AR MAX, and I DO have some PS1 games...I want this to be decently legal, if possible. If it's possible, could the entire mod just run from a burned disc and not actually hack anything? And no, I tried hooking my PS2 up to my computer via Ethernet and for some reason it wouldn't let me share the internet connection...just cancelled out my wireless network's Internet until I turned off the sharing. I don't think it would be very smart to put the thing in my dad's study or the hallway in front of the door (that's where the router and only ethernet slots that are hooked directly to the wall through a cable) are.

Install FreeMcBoot, and from there you can run whatever homebrew you want. You'll eithier need someone to install it on a memory card for you, access to another exploit at least temporarily so you can run the installer, or be able to connect one of your memory cards to the PC. However, its worth it, and currently the best method available.

Can i use the AR MAX's memory card/flash drive utility? My flash drive wouldn't stay recognized for long though...went off and on in both USB slots. Would it work, though, if I could fix that problem?

I'm not sure what version of AR Max you have, but you can use this guide if you have an AR Max Evo, or this one if you have the original AR Max.
