Tips on removing solder without special tools

Place object in oven at 400F for 30 minutes
Grab object with heat resistant glove
Bang object against a surface with the parts you want to remove facing down
You will find that your surface is now glazed in solder and surface mounts components. Your board now has less of those things on it.
Other than that, grab a desoldering iron. It's worth the $30 investment if you expect to be doing this kind of thing. Your local radioshack probably still carries them, though that may be going out the window soon with the bankruptcy and whatnot.
