Super Joy III button wiring help

Does anyone have any advice for wiring buttons to a Super Joy III famiclone? I found this pinout, but I don't get how to wire up the controller. To activate the controller buttons, do I just wire tacts to the connections where the rubber pads would go, or is there some other way to wire up tacts? I'd like to shrink the controller as much as possible. Any and all help is appreciated.

You can cut the controller down to the size of the glop top. All you need to do is figure out which traces are for the data connections, power, and ground. As for buttons you could do the same just wire one side of a momentary switch to the button's signal trace and the other side to ground.

That's what I figured but didn't really want to fry it. Is it possible to cut off the cart slot and it still run?

You mean the cart slot? Yeah you can desolder that. Cutting off the board it's on? Nope
