After now making three of the Mini64's I've decided to try a A using a different case A OKW :D

Although this case is slightly bigger than the Mini64, it is about half the thickness. I'm also open to what you guys think I should name this portable, so lets hear some ideas!? :thumb:

Here some pics of progress so far:

Inside back of the case. Lots of sanding was required to everything flat.

N64 mobo for reference on size.

Outside back of the case. Z hole already cut out. Still need to cut out the R and L buttons. Charge jack and headphone jack holes also cut out.

Cart slot cut out.

Front of the case. Started to cut out the button surrounds.

Board cut, cart slot relocation.

Controller cut, controls wired and resistors moved from back of the board to the front so that it sits flush in the case.

Just need to wait a week or so for the clear coat to harden completely before I can flatten and polish.

Up next, assembley.

And while I'm at it, the Mini64BK:

What kind of heat-sinks and fan setup are you going to use? don't want it getting hot..

Re: Slim64 N64 Portable Worklog 05/01/2012

some slim copper heatsinks would keep it relatively cool without a fan. and which case is that? looking great so far!

Re: Slim64 N64 Portable Worklog 05/01/2012

Like Joeyjoe said, some slim copper heatsinks with 3cm (just over an inch) fan sucking hot air out.

If I'm perfectly honest, N64s don't really need fans. All the other N64 portables I've made don't have fans and don't overheat even after 2-3 hrs gaming. Ventilation on the other hand is a must, the heat has to go somewhere.

The Slim64 as now been flattend and polished:

It's come out rather nice I think.

Now I'm just going to leave it alone until the weekend when I shall then commence putting the internals in :)

Nice casework! You must have put a lot of time into this one.

Re: Slim64 N64 Portable Worklog 05/01/2012

Wait, what do you mean you flattened and polished it? Buffed?

Re: Slim64 N64 Portable Worklog 05/01/2012

Thanks! It only took me about 30 min to get it to look like this. Use some really fine sandpaper, about 2000g with plenty of water and very carefully sand away making sure the sandpaper is flat at all times. That is what you call flattening, basically removing the orange peel effect left over from spraying the clear coat.

To finish off, get some cutting paste and literally buff the sh!t out of the case. It also doesn't hurt to put some car polish on followed by car wax for the best shine.

Re: Slim64 N64 Portable Worklog 05/01/2012

Made some very nice progress over the weekend on the Slim64. It's almost there, just need to sort out the audio as I'm having a few issues with the wheel pot I wanted to use, I may just switch it to a sliding pot now anyway. I'm just waiting for a new analog stick to turn up and I also need to fit the rest of the heatsinkage. Anyway, pics:

Dude... That looks absolutely lovely.

Re: Slim64 N64 Portable Worklog 05/01/2012

Gorgeous portable! And your layout and wiring is so clean (so far)! I'm really thinking I might just do the same with the expansion pack when I get around to making an N64 portable. I just don't have the patience anymore to try rewiring it. That's pretty much what stopped my progress in the past on an N64p.

Re: Slim64 N64 Portable Worklog 05/01/2012

I'm new here and i have been reading the megastickies and everything trying to learn about modding and i was wondering what the brown thing with the holes and wires are? Sorry if its something really obvious and i should know what it is...
