PSP-1000 left trigger acting up

When I started the PSP-1000 that I fixed in the toaster today, the L trigger was acting as if it's always held down, as if the button is shorted somewhat. The trigger itself was moving normally and freely.

So I popped it open at home, reseated the button, cleaned the sensors and connectors and it worked fine. That was until I put the faceplate back on and tightened the screws. It started acting as if it's shorted again.

Suggestions? I tried reflashing the firmware, thinking it was a software problem. Also, the trigger worked great the previous day, I don't know what the heck happened to it.
