portable gamecube help

Update on the wiikey. I hooked it back to my wii to make sure i could get it working with gamecube games and I finally got it to update to 1.5 and it shows my games. when i select a game the wii reboots and i go back into the disc channel and the games load so far but none work. f-zero freezes on the first screen, twilight princess freezes when loading to the beginning of the game and super smash bros freezes when loading levels. am i doing something wrong? or did none of the games get transferred or something?

Edit: I testes wind waker and mario kart both worked fine so i assume something went wrong with the files

It sounds like the FFC is not in all the way, or is crooked. Some WiiKeys require you to push HARD while closing the connector to make sure it's in all the way. Check both ends of the FFC to be sure.

would that cause only some games to work? I really have no clue, I will test it later tonight. Thanks for all your help. I just have a few more parts that should be here next week then its time to put it all together, tomorrow I might start some case cutting but I may have to wait for the weekend. other than that I'm getting ideas on where to put everything and trying to figure out if I can trim my controller. Its some cheapo off brand I got form amazon, looks exactly the same as a nintendo one but has no logo. as far as I can tell it works pretty good.

Having the FFC connector not positioned quite right can make a lot of crazy things happen. With me, it was only Super Mario Sunshine that would freeze as you tried to enter a level, but most other games worked fine.

hmm thats weird. anyway after trouble shooting I thought i might as well just try a new iso and it works now. They were transfered from pc to sd with wbfs then back to pc using wbfs so I'm sure they got corrupt or something, I'm not so sure I let them finish transferring now that I think about it.

my breakout board came today so I'm about to start wiring it up right now

Got it all wired up but it wont work. I'm not completely sure I'm doing it right but I have it wired up right and the ffc is positioned right. so do I need the lid switch and the pin 29 switch? and do I just connect pin 32 to 3.3v? The wiikey shows no lights but the gamecube turns on but says no disc, and if i turn the lid switch so it would be closed it says reading disc

You should apply 3.3v to pin 32, keep the lid switch closed as you power on the GameCube (open it only when you need to "switch a disc"), and make sure you have a normally closed switch on pin 29. Pin 29 will be connected to ground at all times until you press the switch - then it is disconnected. That is what you want. Do you have all 10 ground pins on the breakout board connected to the GameCube's ground?

I've had one defective breakout board, so that's not out of the question either.

so what does pin 29 connect to when pressed, I thought it was 1.9v or 3.3v or something and I have all 10 connected to ground

If the lid switch is closed when turning on the gamecube the screen shows nothing

When is the blue light supposed to flash? it does nothing, does that mean its getting no power or will something else cause that.

You can have pin 29 connect to nothing when the switch is pressed OR you can have it connect to 1.9v (but not 3.3v). Having it connect to 1.9v at the switch press may be necessary if you can't get the WiiKey to work but it is not always necessary. I think Tcahy said that if there is too much interference around the pin 29 wires, 1.9v on the normally open pin would fix that.

The blue light flashing means that the WiiKey and the GameCube have communicated and the WiiKey is loading its firmware, which would then show up on the GameCube's menu. What exactly have you done for the lid switch? I have a feeling you connected the WiiKey's pin 23 to ground for "lid closed". Or did you put a switch between pin 23 on the GameCube and WiiKey?

I have the original lid switch connected to pin 23 and ground, if I leave it alone (open) and turn on the cube then go to the disc thing it says insert disc, then if I hold the switch (close) it says reading disc but no lights or anything every turn on on the wiikey. I might redo the wiring since it seems i have it all setup right, unless you thing my wireing is too long. My wires that connect from the gamecube to the breakout board are about 1.5" or 3.5-4cm then I'm using a wii disc drive connector (could that be an issue?) which is about 3.5" or 8.5cm

I don't understand what you mean by that. What you should have is a switch between pin 23 of the breakout board and pin 23 on the GameCube. When you press the switch (closed) it will connect the two pins and act as lid closed, and if it's not pressed the two pins will be left disconnected. Ground shouldn't be involved.

yeah, in your last post I thought that was what you meant, I just guessed on how it connected. I'm about to see if that will fix it, but it does something, when pressed (lid closed) the gamecube shows no display till I open and close the lid then it works like normal, and when on the disc menu pressing the switch makes the message go from instert disc to reading disc. oh well, I'll test it connected right. Again thanks for all your help its really nice to have.

UPDATE: having the switch between pin 23 on gamecube and pin 23 on the board does nothing.

I'm wondering if you may have the wiring a little confused on the breakout board or the motherboard. When you say it does nothing, do you mean having the switch on or off has no effect at all? The only thing I can think of is that the pin 23 you wired is not actually pin 23...

But the GameCube does flash between insert disc and reading disc, for sure? This is what it is supposed to do, and the WiiKey's blue light would flash along with the flashing messages until you press the pin 29 switch.

I will double check the wiring and post back, but I followed this

http://forums.shockslayer.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=61

and unless the charts showed are for if you solder on the backside (side without the heat sink) of the mobo then I'm pretty sure its all correct. I have checked with a multimeter and all pins are being connected to the wiikey and none are touching each other (besides ground)

Oh and I forgot, to clarify the switch. Right now it's between pin23 gamecube and pin 23 breakout board/wiikey so when pressed pin23 gamecube is connected to pin 23 breakout board/wiikey having it like this does nothing, going to the disc menu the message says insert disc when open and closed.

Connecting the pin 23 gamecube to a ground point causes this message to say reading disc, but I cant get any blue light to show on the wiikey.

The picture at the bottom of that topic shows the heatsink side of the mobo. Can we see a picture of your setup? I think the issue is just some kind of confusion in the wiring, especially because pressing your lid switch does nothing.

Also, do you have a Wii to test the WiiKey on? You always want to make sure it works like it's supposed to before blaming anything else.

well right now I'm re-wiring it, I'm taking my time and making sure I do it right but if it doesnt work after that then I will get a picture

and yes I have a wii, I just did a test to make sure I didnt fry it. it seems to work just fine.

so i just finished wire it again and same problems. no lights, and the lid switch isnt working right, connecting pion23 gamecube to wiikey does nothing but connecting it to ground does.
