My first DMG mod - KingBoy (tentative title, pre-backlight)

Yo bros. I'm new here, and I thought I'd post my current project. Right now it's just painted, but I'm planning on installing a yellow backlight. I also need to get a replacement screen cover. You can't really tell in the image, but it's pretty chewed up because I bought this gameboy from a shady little swap meet. Those don't cost much to replace though.

I thought it looked kind of, er, King-ly.

Just chillin' in Lavender Town. nbd. It's got those dead pixel lines. :<

So, this was done with krylon metallic red over a layer of gold. The same gold was used for the buttons.

I'll post more pictures as this lil project progresses.

That is a very nice paint job.

Before you backlight it, repair those dead lines it looks like you have. Here's a video showing me doing that with a soldering iron:

I had no idea that that could be done. Now I'll have to try that on one of my gameboys.

Thanks, dudes!

Bibin, that's actually extremely helpful, thank you!

EDIT: I just ordered my yellow backlight. Super excited.

Re: My first DMG mod - KingBoy (tentative title, pre-backlig

I've also found that if you play the Gameboy every once in a while, the lines don't occur nearly as much.

Re: My first DMG mod - KingBoy (tentative title, pre-backlig

Backlight = success. I'll post some pictures when I have good lighting. I couldn't quite fix the dead pixel lines, though, which is whatever. It doesn't bother me much, but I think I'd like to sell this, so I'll have to open it back up and figure it out.

Overall, i think it looks pretty neat! The paint got a little scuffed up in one or two places while disassembling and reassembling over and over. but eh. Pixxxxx coming soon.

ALSO, I need some opinions. I need to replace the screen cover, and I was wondering what would look better: a regular DMG one, or a Play It Loud series one? I'm leaning more toward a Play It Loud one.

Re: My first DMG mod - KingBoy (tentative title, pre-backlig

Get a custom gameboy logo one from eBay I'll pm you the link.

Re: My first DMG mod - KingBoy (tentative title, pre-backlig

Nice work, man! I personally try not to use painted buttons because I've never been able to paint any with much success, but those came out pretty well. The shiny red Gameboy with a yellow backlight must look sweet

Re: My first DMG mod - KingBoy (tentative title, pre-backlig

This is probably just my DMG but, whenever it gets dead lines I have found that slowly and/or fastly scrolling the conrtast the lines go away. Might just be mine is SUPER screwed up.

Re: My first DMG mod - KingBoy (tentative title, pre-backlig

So, I tried that fast contrast scrolling, and it kinda worked a little bit!

BoFoSho: there is one of those custom screens in particular that I really dig. I'll ask him if he still has it!

HERE WE GO:

She's complete. Although, I've come across another potential problem.
Whenever I kind of squeeze it near the top left corner, the system restarts. So, uh... there's that. It feels slightly loose, though, so it's probably an issue of the case not being closed tightly enough.

ALSO, I'd be willing to sell or trade this at some point, if anyone's interested!

Re: My first DMG mod - KingBoy (tentative title, pre-backlig

Me too, ha. Oops.
But it works if you open it in a new tab!

Re: My first DMG mod - KingBoy (tentative title, pre-backlig

This is true.
Nice! Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like you used a nonelectronics Lemondrop colored backlight. I just stuck one in my own dmg yesterday!

Re: My first DMG mod - KingBoy (tentative title, pre-backlig

'Tis pretty. You seem to do some nais jobs. I'm excited to see more projects in the future. ;3

Also, for those people too lazy to open in a new tab:

YEAH! Thanks! Haha.

I actually bought one of the new Apeflax ledx3 vb ones that are all self-contained. Super handy. Good price, too.

I'm going to get a red one pretty soon to put in my current project, which is a teal MGB with red buttons. I kinda know what to expect out of this process now, so I'm excited!

Re: My first DMG mod - KingBoy (tentative title, pre-backlig

That's a mighty fine DMG you've got there.

Re: My first DMG mod - KingBoy (tentative title, pre-backlig

It'd be a shame if something were to happen to it.......
SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.........
BOOM!
