Interested in a Portable Gamecube

I have come across this site several times as a result of Google, and today I saw a couple portable gamecubes that caught my eye.

How does it work if I want to hire someone to build a portable gamecube for me? If anyone is interested, please PM me. I do not want the Disc Drive.

Be very careful who you get to build you a portable Gamecube.

A few people will say they can build one, but they have never built a portable and really have no idea what they are doing.
Others will say they can, but will try for 4-6 months with no end in site.

Check with one of the reputable builders like Ashen, Zenloc, Techknott, Tchay, etc. It won't be cheap but it will get done and it will be a quality portable.

I would be a bit iffy on most who say they can build one but have never done it. Though I've never built a portable and I believe I could do it. Of course I work as an electronics assembler and know a fair amount about electronics. But yeah. Be careful with that.

And if someone quotes you a price under 600 for a gcp without a disk drive and with batteries they're probably lying

Thanks for the replies. I liked the one that Ashen built with the custom Zelda emblem ... Does he normally sell his projects ?

I was also looking at the Envision that is for sale at $1000. What do you guys think about that price ?

Ashen does commissions but if you ask him now you'll have to wait until he gets his own projects finished.

And $1000 is serious money to drop on a custom made portable, but it is a great portable.

I haven't paid much attention to the actual workmanship, but I think that a grand for that thing is a decent deal.

Also, Herma, I know exactly how you feel. I *could* build one, but that doesn't mean I would be a good choice of who to commission... Not that I'd take a commission on something I'm not 135% sure I can do.

That said, anthonymacc, if you want to throw a $300 "security fee" my way, and then never hear from me again; feel free. :D

I hate to say that I normally sell my projects, but I suppose up until this point I have sold all of them but the Revolution, which I built for myself and is currently not for sale. Sorry.

That all aside I'd say $600-$1000usd will be the normal range of what you'll expect to pay if you were to commission someone. It will all depend on the parts they use and how much they feel their time is worth. I know the $1000 price tag I charge for a finished GC portable seems steep but you have to look at it from the right perspective. Firstly, parts alone for a GCp that includes batteries will range anywhere from $250-450 depending on what you buy. Secondly, you have to consider what the persons time is worth. If I spend 80+ hours of my free time working on a portable and I've incurred $300 worth of parts costs, you could essentially say I've been working for around $8.50 an hour. Which is about a quarter of what I make at my "day job" and only slightly over minimum wage here in the US. For the time invested, its not a huge incentive to keep churning out portables.

Just wanted to put that into perspective. Most people build these things for the love of it, not for financial gain. Everytime some flaxhead on youtube makes a stupid comment about the price I just want to scream.

Anyways, I'd say you could get a respectable modder from here or even the MBB forums to do it for a bit less if you really wanted to negotiate pricing. All of the people Hail listed above I'd trust 100% to get the job done and have it functional and looking nice, the only person Hail left out that I can think of that has also spent ALOT of time with the GC lately is Shockslayer, who I'd also trust to get it done.

Anyone else may be able to do the job but I'd ask around here as to how reputable/trustworthy said person is before you commit to anything. If you feel like waiting it out, I should be available in a few months.

I agree :)

The only reason I didn't mention SS is I didn't think he was doing commissions right now.

Thanks for all the responses !

I have a budget of about $800-$1000, depending on the features. So far, Ashen's unit with the TV out has caught my eye... the revolution I think ?

Someone else PM'd me the other day stating Metal Gear Twin Snakes does not play all the way through b/c of controller port 4... is there a work around for this or should I just scratch this game off my list ?

Also, N64 runs sluggish for the most part, am I correct? I would love my custom portable to run every Nintendo System (Except Wii / DS)

Ashen, as I stated in my PM, I am very interested in obtaining a custom handheld. If anyone else on this board is interested and can produce something similar, please let me know.

Otherwise I will patiently wait for a unit like the Revolution :)

One option, you could find a save file of metal gear solid being saved AFTER that boss fight, then I (or your designated portablizer) could swap out my memory card with yours. Another option is using cheatcodes. But I am not sure if the wiiker fusion supports AR cheat functions.

N64 runs perfect on mario 64, both zelda titles, starfox 64 (minor graphical glitches in second level but full speed). All others will be sluggish, yes.

My $1000 price tag is certainly steep. I raised it to 1000 because I have been getting MANY offers around 700-800. Most of those deals will fall through. Also, I love playing the Envision, so I don't want to give it away for much less than 1000 :)
