Do i really need a protection Circuit for batteries?

Do i really need a protective circuit for my battery pack? I've read and was told that, the protective circuit helps the console from charging the battery to much. What i mean is, for the battery to get to much power. Instead can i just have a lid in the case were one inserts batteries, and once its out, i remove the batteries and recharge them on another outlet on its on.

I'm just trying to set it all up, my budget is out for the month and i dont want to hold this project out any longer. I'm not trying to create a beautiful project since its my first one i dont mind having a bit of dirt and mess!

You would need a protection circuit in the case you were describing as well.

Protection circuits are designed so the battery doesn't get damaged from over charging or short circuiting. You can of course have removable batteries in your portable that you charge, but you would still need to have some sort of protection circuit to charge them in some sort of charging station you would make/buy. Protection circuits aren't very expensive, and if you are making a portable it's one of the smaller purchases you'd make.

If you're using Li-po or Li-ion batteries, you need a protection circuit. These batteries can catch fire pretty easily if they're not handled correctly.

Well If the batteries i'd be using have a charging port on they're own. Its like a small case that charges rechargeable batteries. So if i use that, then i dont need a protection circuit since batteries will be charged externally on they're own away from the portable console alone. It bcause the only thing im missing is the batteries and the protection circuit as well as a smart charger. So i want to be able to build it as soon as possible then later down the road upgrade it but as of now can i just do that? Or do i still need a protection circuit for the batteries even though they wont be rechargable inside the portable rather than externally on they're own.

If you use the type of batteries I told you in another topic, we don't care if the protection circuit is on batteries or charger, let me explain:

You put batteries in your portable, like any batteries.

You have to take the charger that comes with the batteries and mod it to use it with your portable:

I'm pretty sure you will understand the picture. There is many ways to do it, but here's the one I thought and used, works pretty well.

I used a psone screen for my portable, so I had a psone wall plug, which has a male jack to charge, and the screen and the female that goes along with it. You can use the plug of your choice, as long as you have the cable, and the female plug that you can solder on your batteries.

So like you can see, on your batteries charger, you have 2 or more pins (depending on the model you choose) that connect to the battery to charge it, but you always have one positive, and one negative(which is the ground). As you can see on the picture, I cut the wall plug from my psone plug and kept the cable with the charging jack. Then I stripped down the wire and connected the positive and negative directly on the good pins on the battery charger (use a multimeter to see which is positive and negative on the cable).

Now you have a functionnal batteries charger. On the other side, like I said, I had the corresponding female that I can plug on the cable we just made. So i just soldered it on the batteries and when I plug male and female together, it's the same as if the batteries were directly on the charger, but with a cable between.

With that technique, you use the original batteries charger, so you have your protection cicuit and console charger!
