Toast said something about it being a signal ground, so if you used it for ground it might screw with the AV. I don't know for sure.

No, the ports have 15 pins, but the cables themselves usually only have 9 wires, only 9 are necessary. If you are just using connectors it wont matter.

If you're just using the connectors you have to find out which pins are reserve, which is difficult because some cables combine pins and stuff because their just ground and it's cheaper than one wire per pin.
