What should I do with this?

So I was given this really terrible "laptop". I wasn't entirely sure what to do with it, I was thinking get linux on it and go from there but I don't think it even has storage on it except from ram. Suggestions and general insults of this piece of junk are welcome.

I have one like that. I ended up just taking the battery out for parts. Other than that, it's completely useless.

I would try getting Linux on it and try to use it as a media extender, or thin client, or WiFi based remote, or something along those lines. It uses an Arm9 based professor at 300mhz, so anything more than a light webserver, dosbox machine, or embedded system is likely too much for it.

You could try putting windows 8 for arm on it when that comes out, but that would be for lulz, nothing more.

Turn it into a Dreamcast. Windows CE is a beast. Also, you could send it to me, so I can do something stupid to it.

It should be a crime to manufacture those things. They might as well ship them straight to the landfill, because that's where they'll go 10 minutes after the box is opened.

I would throw it on ebay for $10. Then you can save some poor soul from making a $100 mistake.

Buy a nice big external hard drive, get an ethernet cable, and make that Sega into a file server. I've got one setup at my house, not on that particular machine, but they are really useful. With a 300MHz processor, there isn't really anything you can do. I doubt YouTube would even be efficient.

actually does anyone know any good tuts on how to load linux from sd card? I can use usb as well but i think through sd would be better for this thing

I doubt you really have an easy way to install/load linux on it, tbh. Chances are that at the price point you go it, it lacks support for booting from anything other than WinCE on the ROM.

In the off chance that it came with an SD card that has CE loaded on it, just replace that with a linux install.

Personally, I would look for some kind of WinCE based fileserve app. If I can't find that, I'd start taking flax apart to see if I can figure out how to change the boot ROM. Highly unlikely that I could, though.

On another note, between torching it and sending it to me for the price of shipping... I think you know where my vote is. :p Toys are fun.

Well I don't really think linux is an option here, it won't let me get into the bios(surprise surprise) and it won't let me access the installation iso for xubuntu because it's awesome like that. I was thinking maybe I could make this into a portable media device running a really light version of linux but that doesn't seem to be going to happen. ( I had case ideas and everything :( ) I'm completely involved in this now though :p. I'm trying to think how I could best use this as a file server, if anyone knows more about linux I would love your help. I may just end up using this for parts for something... or just as a paper weight... or for fuel...

First off, you'd need to have a way to mount the ISO, or at least build it into an actual disk.

Second, you need to make sure you're using an OS that supports the ARM9 Architecture. Just a tip, if your options are "32 bit or 64 bit", it's likely not going to work.

Basically, Look for a fileserve app that runs under CE
